Science for me is fun and exciting. It is fascinating to find out why things happen the way they happen. Similarly, I experience the same enjoyment in math when I understand the way numbers behave and then apply that understanding to real life situations. We are all surrounded by math and science, and a practical knowledge of them makes the world that much less mysterious.
I teach and tutor because I can find no greater satisfaction than to instill the excitement I feel about the maths and sciences in others.
When I tutor a student, the first thing I do is evaluate what piece of the foundation is missing. Every science and math concept is built upon the foundations laid last week, month, or year. Trying to teach a concept or technique without the right supports beneath is merely postponing the problem until later. So often, once the root difficulty is found (and fixed!), a plethora of other problems and fears diminish or disappear. Once you understand it, science and math is fun and easy.
My style is not one who instructs. Instead, I lead and guide. The lessons we teach ourselves are the ones we remember best. Once I understand what concept a student needs to be taught or clarified, I devise a series of problems or logic steps that the student can solve in succession. Ultimately this will allow the student to start from a place of confidence and comprehension giving them a hands-on understanding as to why the new technique or theory works.
If you're anxious to learn, I'm anxious to teach!
I come to teaching having spent over fifteen years in industry, building products of all shapes and descriptions from stereo speakers to collagen hemostats, from holograms to helium leak detectors. I found some of the greatest satisfaction in my jobs came from teaching and assisting my staff, so I am now excited to be focusing my career towards this type of pursuit. Over the last three years I have been either tutoring or working in classroom settings. In 2010 I earned my Massachusetts Physics Teaching License.
I have a Bachelors of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT and an MBA from Babson College. My hobbies include hockey, skiing, golfing (poorly), and (when time permits) theater.
Saved the day — Nelson is great. He was tutoring my younger daughter in Pre-Calculus, when my college freshman daughter had a "Statistics Final" emergency. Nelson squeezed her in that night, even though he wasn't sure he was going to be able to help her. To make a long story short, he was a tremendous help, she got a 92 on the exam, and ended the semester with an A. I highly recommend him as a tutor. (He helped o ...
