Hello! Thank you for taking the time to look at my tutoring profile. As you can see, I offer a wide range of services, from many areas of math to multiple kinds of English support and also Spanish as well. I have been teaching since 1995, when I began my teaching career by working in both the Writing Center and the Math Center at Keene State College simultaneously (the first student to ever work at both!). Following that, I lived and worked in Quito, Ecuador, and then returned to the United States to go back to college to get a degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) from UMass/Amherst. I taught ESL and math for six years at Academy Middle School in Fitchburg, MA, during which time I also went to school for a second Masters degree (in Math for grades 5-8). I left Fitchburg to work at the Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School in Devens, MA, to teach math and recently took a job in Groton, MA, in ESL. In addition, I am currently taking classes at Fitchburg State to become a licensed Special Education teacher. As you can see, I am always busy and I continue to push myself to learn new things and to improve as an educator. My experience ranges from Kindergarten through adult (of all ages). I look forward to working with you!
Students with Aspergers/on the autism spectrum benefit from a structured, systematic approach to education. I am a super organized teacher and I am very metacognitive in my approach to lessons, thinking ahead to anticipate points of confusion, interactions around content that are social skills-dependent, and ways to scaffold, modify, and accommodate. I specialize in fading support in systematic ways that feel safe and manageable for students while still pushing them to increase independence and critical thinking.
My first Massachusetts teaching license was for ESL/ESOL. I decided to major in ESL/Bilingual Education when I was living in Ecuador and teaching English; I realized that I enjoyed teaching a topic that was so relevant and immediately useful for my students. My instruction focuses on the four domains of language acquisition (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and is available across grade levels, ages (school-age to adult), and subjects.
I have been practicing yoga for 16 years. In that time, I have tried many different styles, from hot yoga to Iyengar to Vini, but my heart belongs to Anusara yoga, with John Friend. I love the balance in Anusara between attention to alignment and muscular strength and the openness of its heart-centered practice which enlivens the poses. I work with the alignment loops and can adjust the level of practice, from very beginning through advanced, to meet the needs of you as a student.
