Dear Students,

Are you having difficulties in school? Maybe I can help. Let me tell you a little bit about my qualifications and if you think they'd serve you well, let's get in touch.

After a wonderful career in teaching that spanned over 25 years, I've lightened my schedule. Currently, I am the reading tutor for a local public school system and I work with private students as well. That work is focused on English and all its challenges: literature, vocabulary, grammar, composition and especially critical thinking skills. My students range from grades 6 to 12. We are focused on learning in a relaxed atmosphere which adds humor to the experience. Learning can be enjoyable and that's one reason for my high success rate.

My own background includes a BA in English with a minor in education, and a MA in Humanities which gives me the resources to add cultural history, art, music, psychology and philosophy to lessons in literature. It's a very enriching blend.

I taught in public and private schools, urban and suburban. I've also worked with non-traditional students, including Special Ed.

Since I've also taught English and Academic Writing on the college level, I'm especially effective in preparing high school students for the challenges that lie ahead. My expertise in teaching analytical writing has been very valuable to students starting their college careers. So many have told me, "Thank you for teaching us how to write!" It's so essential because most college assessments are based on the students' critical thinking skills and their ability to express them in writing.

My credentials are unusual for their variety and depth. If you think they'd be valuable to you, please let me know.

Although I spoke Arabic as a child, regrettably I am no longer bilingual. But I remain bicultural.
I grew up in the Arabic culture, know its customs, its three religions, cuisine, music, etc. I have taught these subjects to both adults and young people.
I would be happily be available to teach them again.

College Counseling

My qualifications for college counseling include many years of experience as a college English teacher with a specialization in academic writing. I have also served as the college's coordinator of fellowships, helping students to apply for graduate studies. My work on the high school level as an English teacher includes SAT prep, college admissions essays and application forms.

My 25 years experience as an English teacher includes preparing students for standardized tests such as the ISEE, SSAT, PSAT, SAT and GRE Verbal Sections. The COOP/HSPT is remarkably similar and I am qualified to include its verbal sections in my tutoring.

For the past four years, I have worked with Duxbury Middle School's SPED Department as a reading tutor. Previously I taught English for over 25 years before semi-retirement.

At Duxbury, I created an individualized program of instruction for each student, geared to specific needs. It went far beyond standardized programs of reading instruction and was remarkably successful for students with dyslexia. In addition to phonics, spelling and vocabulary work, we developed reading comprehension skills, using newspaper, magazine and book selections with special interest to young people. This approach opened the doors to success in all subjects and a widened interest in the world around us.

Working with dyslexic students requires patience and a good sense of humor, as well as a variety of teaching techniques. I have all in abundance and would be happy to help.

Elementary (K-6th)

My tutoring work with 6th graders in the SPED program of Duxbury Schools includes English, Social Studies and all reading related subjects.
I'm certified in English 6-12 and taught full- time for many years, part- time more recently. This background has given me the resources and skills to help students organize their approach to learning, then proceed to apply their organizational skills to effective learning.

Some of my work includes class projects, ELA novels, essay writing, reading assignments for various disciplines, MCAS and test preparation. Our one on one learning strategies have been very successful for both student and teacher.

My teaching experience includes several private schools which administered the ISEE. I've also prepared students for this test, as well as the PSAT, SAT and GRE. My versatility comes from over 25 years experience teaching English.

In addition to the test content itself, I prepare students for factors which influence test outcome, such as anxiety reduction techniques, organization skills and "tricks of the testing trade."

Admission to a fine private school has long ranging consequences for college acceptances and career success. I'd be glad to put my experience to work for you.

As an college student, I minored in Theology with 30 credits in the field. After graduate school with a Master's Degree in Humanities, I was awarded three fellowships in Religious Studies from the National Endowment for the Humanities at Fordham University, Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia. I have taught several high school courses in Religion: Christianity, World Religions, Ethics, Social Justice.

SAT Reading

As an English teacher for over 30 years, on both the high school and college levels, I've had extensive experience and success in preparing students for all verbal sections of the SAT.

Special Needs

This is my fourth year as the part-time reading tutor for the Special Education department at a local public school district, where I teach middle and high school students. My students have some learning disabilities, ranging from dyslexia to autism and some just need individual attention. In addition to work with Wilson and Orton Gillingham, I draw from my many years as an English teacher to create a highly successful, individualized program in reading skills. Our activities include: phonics, syllabication, pronunciation, definition, sentence creation, reading comprehension from a variety of sources which include books, magazines and newspapers. This program has resulted in very proficient young readers.

Study Skills

Success in any subject depends on intelligent study skills. Especially effective is the SQ3R Method which teaches the student to Survey the material; formulate Questions from the survey; Read the material; Review the surveyed text and whatever underlinings and notations were made: Recite the answers to the questions in written form.

My students have found this method very helpful--focused and efficient in its use of study time. The results are excellent.

I have also taught note taking skills on both the high school and college level, an essential skill for academic achievement.
