ADD/ADHD

I am a mother of a child diagnosed with ADHD. Over the years, we have met many obstacles. These challenges made myself become more open-minded working with students that have ADHD, along with other disabilities. My experience consists of 10 years working in a pull-out classroom, small-group, and individual. As a classroom teacher, behavior management is essential to growth of learning. My behavior management program included the students participation, awareness, and being responsible for own actions. Additionally, I created different instruction strategies and material for assisting students to learn with their ADHD. I believe it is important to let the student know we all learn differently and for them to find their strengths to utilize them in their academic career and life.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my strongest areas in mathematics. I find it very logical and sequential. While tutoring Algebra, I create a reference page to be added to a student notebook. This quick reference book is a good way for students to independently refer back to concepts taught instead of being provided the answers. The concepts are to encourage independence, to be responsible for own learning, and assist in imprinting the information into their brain. When tutoring is terminated, the student may choose to keep the reference notebook. Notebook and material to create reference notebook is provided as part of the tutoring cost.

Autism

I have worked with a number of students diagnosed on the autistic spectrum from severe to moderate. My experiences, over the past 10 years, include working: in a 6th grade ELA pull-out for students with learning disabilities; at an early intervention preschool for students with special needs; and in an inclusion setting. I have participated in professional development training, as well as, attended college courses related to working with students with special needs.

Dyslexia

Spelling and reading can be very challenging for some students. Dyslexia is a subject in which I have extensive knowledge and experience. I am certified in Wilson Reading System Level 1, Wilson Fundations K-3, and Orton-Gillingham 1. The Wilson Reading System, an offshoot from Orton-Gillingham, is a program with explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory instruction for reading and spelling. Literature

I utilize the Project Read Story Form Literacy Connection and Report Form for fiction and nonfiction text. Additionally, I teach students reading comprehension skills from their summer reading requirements.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher, many of my students benefited from having academic support. This academic support included organization, note taking, identifying relevant information, creating own studying tools, finding the student's independent access to preparing and studying for class work and assessments. Some of my experience includes working with students who have been diagnosed with executive function disorder.

Vocabulary

I have taught vocabulary from PreK to 6th grade. I utilize current reading material the student is using and summer reading books required for school. I teach the students how to use the text to help in identifying the meaning of an unknown word. Additionally, students are taught prefixes, suffixes, Latin roots and Greek roots to identify the meaning of vocabulary words.

Writing

I have taught writing skills in an elementary school with inclusive and small group settings. The skills vary from good, sentence formation to paragraphs and essays. Graphic organizers are used for the student to organize their thoughts before writing a rough draft. Students edit their own work with provided editing skills teaching and reference materials. Students work to complete a finish product for any school assignments.
