I have been working with children both at summer camp and in schools for the past eight years. My unique education experiences allow for coverage of many topics, like middle school math, high school physics, drafting, photography, and many popular computer programs (Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc.).
My tutoring style is predominantly student driven; students must be willing to learn and discover new things along with their instructor. I do not like to simply "talk at" students, because the more they are dynamically engaged in a lesson, the more likely they will be to retain the information they seek. This style comes both from teaching students and being a "tutee" myself. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to engage in a dynamic learning session that equally involves both tutor and tutee, because communication is important for the learner to comprehend the material and for the instructor to understand the learner's comprehension of the material.
I have been working with Photoshop for a couple of years now. I am self-taught, through the assistance of online video lessons from professionals, like Scott Kelby. I am a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professional (NAPP) and receive publications and web links that help me further develop the skills and tricks that all the pros use. I am familiar with all the basic tools (layers, color enhancements, lighting adjustments, text, sharpness, etc.)
I spent two years in design school in Boston, where I took some classes specifically in AutoCAD. Most of my assignments for other classes required knowledge of AutoCAD to design, draw, and present concepts. In 2009 I spent a semester tutoring drafting students in the technical education wing of my former high school, where I spent two and a half additional years learning AutoCAD. I am familiar with most commands, their locations on the menus/ribbons, as well as their hotkey strokes and shortcuts.
I have been working with cameras and photography on and off for about ten years. I really started getting into artistic photography when I purchased a DSLR a few years ago. I have been learning different techniques from friends who have been in the photography and modeling business for years. Most of my focus is animals (mostly dogs) and nature/landscapes. I also like night cityscapes, but I don't live near enough to a city to practice that often. Most of my experience is with Canon equipment, some with Kodak, and a little bit with Nikon.
I ran high school cross country for three seasons and track for six seasons (two indoor and four outdoor). I was awarded varsity for all six track seasons, placed in most league and district championships including a first place in the 2 mile relay my senior year. Every spring I competed in the district decathlon, so I am familiar with all the events. Currently I am a high jump and distance running coach for my local high school team.
