I am an enthusiastic individual who enjoys learning and sharing that learning with people of all ages. I have been an active member of Americorp working with inner city pre-school children in Pittsburgh, and an avid volunteer at a learning center working with disabled children in the same city. I have student taught biology and chemistry-related classes at the undergraduate level, taught undergraduate freshman calculus, and taken a many classes in science and mathematics. I am experienced at working with Computers including the Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, Publisher), and love using technology to efficiently advance learning. I have been working with WyzAnt doing One-on-One tutoring for over 3 years, and adapt my tutoring methods uniquely to each student I have as their learning needs require. While I typically do lessons in person, I can also provide online tutoring as needed to supplement lessons, or in the place of face to face meetings.
I enjoy making connections between things, and work my "day job" as a researcher and technician in the Chemistry Department of MIT, managing mammalian cell cultures and performing sub-cellular molecular imaging of neurons. I work to inspire my students to ask questions about the world and connect the topics they are studying to a larger picture of our existence. Please give me the opportunity to help you learn more about some of these subjects and how they relate to the real world!
My undergraduate degree was in neuroscience and included extensive non-class related laboratory experiences. This give me a good working knowledge of most micro, molecular, and cellular biological systems, and the ability to figure out and explain new ones or ones that I'm not familiar with as well.
I'm also well versed in techniques used to study these subjects and their applications. Having received my Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering working on Biomaterial Development, I now do cell culture experimentation and molecular genetics in the Chemistry department at MIT.
I had an undergraduate minor in chemistry and am now doing my PhD in biomedical engineering with a focus on chemistry. This being the case, I have a very good working knowledge of basic chemical and biochemical concepts and their applications and can generally figure out how to work through problems and how they apply to the real world.
I've worked with pre-school and school aged children in reading and math through the Americorps Program in JumpStart and Head Start classrooms. These programs were dedicated to one on one interactions with children for early reading and math skills. I've also worked at daycare centers with school age children assisting them with homework and problem solving in a variety of situations.
I'm a graduate student with a high work ethic and high grades in my academic work during both my undergraduate and graduate careers which reflect that. Study skills are a matter of organizing your resources and your time in the most efficient way possible in order to learn the material necessary for a course or subject so that you will be able to recall and use the material again later. Be it in the next few days on an exam, in the next few weeks or months for a course, or over a lifetime for real life applications of the material to real world situations, figuring out how to organize yourself in your studying efforts is the first step to success. This organization also allows identification of problem areas and preemptive or corrective action to head off or attempt to fix difficulties before they become detrimental.
Jenifer Helped Enormously — My daughter was struggling with a "flipped" chemistry class, as were many of her classmates. We found Jenifer through WyzAnt and she did a great job meeting with my daughter and helping her to understand concepts that simply weren't getting through in the classroom. My daughter's teacher noticed a distinct improvement in her performance once we started working with Jenifer, and her performance imp ...
