I have 5+ years of private tutoring experience in a variety of subjects, including Chinese, pre-calculus, SAT Math, AP US History, English, biology, physics, and ACT. I have worked as a college consultant by helping to revise personal statements and essays, and ultimately helped students get into the colleges of their choices.

I scored within the top 1% for the MCAT (40) and ACT (34). I also scored 5s on AP Biology, AP World History, AP American History, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics. I scored 800 on SAT II Math C, 760 on SAT II Biology, and 730 on SAT II US History.

I am a native Chinese speaker. In college, I have taken the highest level of Chinese and spent a year in China honing my language skills.

As a person who has worked with and studied about children, I love tutoring to help others better understand material with the techniques that I have developed over the years.

Chinese

I am a native Chinese speaker who also took 3 years of Chinese at Harvard, including the highest level of Chinese. After graduation, I spent a year in China on the Fulbright Fellowship, which also helped my language skills as I immersed myself with the culture. I have a citation in Chinese (after completing certain requirements) from Harvard.

College Counseling

After going through the college application process and gaining acceptances to many colleges, including Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, etc. I know I am qualified to advise students through this process. I have already helped students with revising personal statements and preparing for interviews. I have also served as an alumnus interviewer for Harvard College. These experiences will help me guide students in going through and excelling within college applications.

Computer Programming

I have developed websites for over ten years. While I self-taught PHP, I had taken the Introductory to Computer Science course at Harvard to learn C, C++, Java, and Javascript. Using these languages, I have built blog engines, modified Wordpress extensions, and designed games. These experiences allow me to teach the logic and have example practices ready when exploring this subject with students.

Dreamweaver

I have used Dreamweaver for over 10 years whenever I develop websites. Hence, I have experience with using it for HTML and computer programming. Additionally, I have used the program before to link directly to files on servers for editing, and so can help direct students to set-up the program for easier access.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in Kumon in the past, which is a teaching program for children from K-12. Through this program, I have worked with children in elementary school to help develop their reading, writing, and math abilities. I will use the effective techniques I gained teaching there to provide the strong foundations for elementary grade classes.

Genetics

Having gotten a 5 on AP Biology, a 15 in the biology section of the MCAT (top 1%), and passed my genetics class at Harvard college, I know I have the knowledge to teach students in this area. Since I have studied this subject for many years, I believe I also have strategies, such as with Mendelian genetics or punnett squares, so that students can better grasp the materials. I look forward to helping students in this area.

Graphic Design

I have graphic designed for over 10 years, including developing websites, pamphlets, posters, brochures, etc. I have used programs including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, GIMP, Pixlr, and more to design logos, banners, and other graphics. I will work with students and help guide them to effective designing.

Handwriting

I've taken calligraphy classes for Chinese and English in the past. I've also worked with words and fonts in art classes. Familiar in both print and cursive writing, I am confident I can help others learn clear and neat handwriting.

MCAT

I recently took the MCAT (June 5, 2014) and received a 40 (top 1%). After studying the subjects for 3 months, I am very familiarized with the test and can help with study strategies and content. Additionally, I have taught biology and physics before, and so have experience teaching certain areas for this test.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook extensively during work as a business consultant and as a research assistant. Thus, I learned how to perform many functions, from simplifying mass-emailing, to connecting with Microsoft Lync, to organizing the calendar and syncing with your phone. I know I will be qualified to answer any questions for easier use of this program.

Microsoft Windows

I've used Microsoft Windows for over 15 years, from Windows 98 through Windows 8. I am very familiar with the different functions as well as installing programs. I can help walk through any questions or concerns when it comes to computers and software.

Organic Chemistry

I've taken two semesters of Organic Chemistry in college and passed with A's (in Harvard College). As part of the MCAT, I also received a 15 (highest available score) in the biology section that contains organic chemistry. I believe I would have strong study strategies for remembering and understanding the logic behind organic chemistry for my students.

Piano

I've had private lessons for piano for over 10 years and have passed state and national exams, including the NYSSMA as well as the Royal Board of Music Association. I've played in concerts as a soloist and with an orchestra. I've given private piano lessons to high school students and elementary school students in the past.

Regents

I've passed all required Regents (biology, math, history, chemistry, physics, etc.) in the past. Having explored these subjects a step further through advanced placement classes (and receiving 5s on most of them), I believe I have the background to help with study strategies and content learning. I will also work with students to understand areas of weaknesses so that I can boost their confidence.

Web Design

I have webdesigned for over 10 years, using programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. With my experience developing a range of websites and working with a number of clients, I have nurtured an eye for different design styles and rules. I believe that such techniques as well as technical know-how (with the programs) will allow me to direct students well.
