I am a married mother of three, and a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and entrepreneur, with a life-long love of learning. Over twenty years of experience as an educator has allowed me to work with a wide range of students (pre-K through professional development), from many different backgrounds. In 2010, I earned a B.A. in entrepreneurship from Lesley University's Center for the Adult Learner, and one year later, received an M.Ed. from the Special Studies Program at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. My approach to tutoring is that of a supportive mentor, building on each student's natural ability to learn.

ADD/ADHD

I have provided academic support (in the form of in school and after school tutoring) for children, teens, and adult learners working through various challenges of ADD or ADHD. In my work as a visual and performing arts educator, I have also gained valuable experience in ways to serve students with ADD/ADHD using creative arts to strengthen practical speech, reading, writing, and math skills. My approach is to work within the student's interests to engage him/her in their unique learning process.

Different areas of difficulty require specific skill building activities. For example, reading fluency and comprehension requires development in: frequent contextual summarization, story mapping/storyboarding, reading aloud and subvocalized reading, and will include teaching students to use bookmarking, underlining, highlighting, and notetaking techniques (building from short length reading assignments).

Expressive Language challenges require development in: active listening, phonetic repetition, storytelling, speech therapy, etc. (use of song, poetry, call & response...).

Executive Functioning challenges require development in: organization and planning with use of
memory triggers (i.e., checklists, visual imagery, color-coding, schedule/routine, time limits/deadlines, physical motion cues, etc.).

Business

Prior to receiving traditional training, I gained practical business knowledge from being a self-employed artist and educator, doing business as a freelance contractor. While earning a B.A. in entrepreneurship from Lesley University's Center for the Adult Learner, and an M.Ed. from the Special Studies Program at Harvard Graduate School of Education, I was trained in the development and analysis of business plans, and marketing plans, for multiple types of organization models. Cross-registration in graduate level courses at Harvard Business School, gave me an opportunity to participate in Think Tank projects, and work with highly skilled business professionals from around the world. My experience includes teaching various workshops in entrepreneurship (i.e., business development, self-employment, business ethics, women entrepreneurs, African-American entrepreneurs, etc.) to youth, and young adults. The development of my unique entrepreneurial curriculum and training programs, has allowed me to collaborate with several successful business owners and programs, such as, Steve Mariotti of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurs, William Murrell of BlackSoftware.com and AboutBlackBoston.com, Books of Hope, Inc., and Elegant Living Home Investment Club.

Drawing

I am the daughter of a master artist, my life-long mentor, a recently retired, tenured professor from Massachusetts College of Art. My personal, and professional, experience as an individual and collaborative visual artist, includes working in the following mediums: painting, drawing, mask-making, collage, paper mache, costume and set design, broommaking, and installation arts. I have been teaching art for more than twenty years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring elementary school students in reading, writing, spelling, social studies, geography, science, and math, for over twenty years. Supervising tutors, and providing direct help with homework, were major aspects of working with such after school programs as, the Community Art Center, The King School, and the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood House. I also have experience working with adolescents, and young adults, as an academic tutor/mentor, working for University of Massachusetts (Boston, and Dartmouth) in local high schools, and residential summer programs. In addition, I have earned an M.Ed. from the Special Studies Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked as a freelance artist and educator for over fifteen years, producing various marketing materials and promotional campaigns, aimed at targeting specific contracts. While earning a B.A. in entrepreneurship from Lesley University's Center for the Adult Learner, and an M.Ed. from the Special Studies Program at Harvard Graduate School of Education, I was trained in the development of marketing plans for multiple business models. Additional market research and mentoring experience has been gained through teaching workshops in entrepreneurship to young adults.

Martial Arts

I have studied tai chi and chi kung under the instruction of Master Heg Robinson of the Roxbury Tai Chi Academy for over 3 years, and gained permission to instruct beginning practitioners. I have earned a blue belt through study, practice, and mentoring new students, in taekwando at the Chang Moo Kwan School, under the instruction of fifth degree black belt, Master Dennis Goldsmith. I am also a member of the Harvard Tiger Crane Tai Chi Club. As part of my studies at Lesley University's Center for the Adult Learner, in connection with my experiential learning program, I developed a training manual and research papers on the healing aspects of martial arts.

Painting

I developed the skill of public speaking through years of experience: working as an educator teaching groups of students, hosting a radio program on WERS, announcing performers for live shows, and conducting site tours. I received training at Emerson College, as an acting and theatre education major, directly under the master acting coach, Kristen Linklater, of the Linklater Technique, and author of Freeing The Natural Voice. I have taught courses in multiple disciplines (including theatre, voice, and spoken word poetry), at such organizations as, the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, Cambridge Performance Project, Arts in Progress, Arts All Day, True HipHop Culture Center, and the Jeremiah E. Burke High School.

Social Studies

I have helped students (from elementary to graduate level) understand major concepts of social studies (i.e., history, sociology, geography, philosophy, psychology, government, political science, civics, ethics, etc.). My approach to student engagement in learning about social sciences, ranges in style from traditional to innovative (reading, writing, discussion, arts-based and hands-on projects, field trips, etc.), depending on the student's needs, and course requirements. My additional qualifications include, a B.A. in entrepreneurship from Lesley University's Center for the Adult Learner, and an M.Ed. from the Special Studies Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. During my undergraduate and graduate studies, I excelled in the following sociology courses: Community Organizing, Organizational Behavior, World Religions, Documentary Filmmaking, The Sociology of Education, Sociology and Visualizing Human Rights. In connection with my sociological research, I completed and presented, written articles, special events, and multimedia projects, such as: Art as Social Change-Sexual Abuse and Domestic Violence, Healing Arts Sciences, Black History Celebrations, Multicultural Advisory Council Affinity Group.

Study Skills

I have helped a wide range of students (elementary through graduate level) develop strong study skills in many academic subjects, as well as for quizzes, tests, research projects, and presentations. Some of the specific study skills I can teach are: self-directed learning, organization, memorization, notation, skimming, reasoning, quantitative and qualitative analysis/comprehension, scholarly writing, drilling, etc. Additionally, I have earned a B.A. in entrepreneurship from Lesley University's Center for the Adult Learner, and an M.Ed. from the Special Studies Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Theatre

I have performed in live theatrical productions since the age of four (over thirty-four years). My training as an actor began in childhood while working with a life-long mentor, the director of the Black Orchid World Theatre, a former professor from Brandeis University, and Massachusetts College of Art. I also had the privilege of training at Emerson College, as an acting and theatre education major, directly under the master acting coach, Kristen Linklater, of the Linklater Technique, and author of Freeing The Natural Voice. Some of the programs, where I have taught theatre include: Cambridge Performance Project, Arts in Progress, True HipHop Culture Center.

Voice (Music)

I have been singing for over thirty years in live theatrical productions and independent films, with hiphop and world roots bands, at nightclubs, universities, and radio stations. My training as a vocalist includes a wide range of genres (blues, jazz, r&b, soul, folk, and rock), learning from professionals, teaching at the Boston Conservatory of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, and Berklee College of Music. I have also had the privilege of training in the Performing Arts Department at Emerson College, directly under the master acting and voice coach, Kristen Linklater, of the Linklater Technique, and author of Freeing The Natural Voice. Some of the programs, where I have taught voice include: Cambridge Performance Project, Arts in Progress, True HipHop Culture Center, and the Jeremiah E. Burke High School.
