I have worked as a public school teacher for 7 years, and I have had students who had mild and severe ADD/ADHD. I have also taken various classes/training in special education and worked in classrooms with special needs. As a student myself, I also suffered with focusing on one subject for a long time, so I understand what it is like for students to have difficulty paying attention.
Thus, I am able to break down learning into smaller chunks, so that students can stay focused. I constantly challenge my students with different hands-on activities, so that they never feel bored or unable to concentrate. My students are always engaged by the various songs, games, dances, physical activities, puzzles, movies that I use to teach them specific skills or concepts.
I also build trust with my students and their parents, so that the students can expect routine/ structure as well as be motivated to learn/ explore in a safe and respectful environment.
I am familiar with the IDEA act and use of IEP's/ 504 plan, so that we can help with your students at home and at school.
I started taking ballet classes when I was 6 years old at the famous Pasadena Civic Ballet Center. I studied ballet for many years until I was able to dance "en pointe" with toe shoes. I have been in performances such as Nutcracker, Vive California, and Christmas Carol. I also know jazz and Chinese folk dancing.
I have played cello ever since I was 12 years old. I was part of my high school and college orchestra as well as the prestigious Pasadena Young Symphony Orchestra and Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra in Los Angeles. Moreover, I have performed in many concerts all over the word from Mexico to Hawaii to Washington DC and received various awards/trophies.
I have a bilingual certification teaching credential in Mandarin Chinese and English. For the last 2 years, I have taught at Los Angeles Unified's first public Mandarin-English dual language immersion school (grades 3-4). I was the lead teacher of the program and coordinated field trips, family events, cultural festivities and also purchased the curriculum, costumes, and arts/crafts. So, I will definitely be able to help you learn Chinese reading, writing, speaking, and listening as well as about Chinese art, dance, culture, history, etc.
I graduated from UCLA Summa Cum Laude with an elementary education emphasis in 2004 and received my CA multiple subject teaching credential and Masters of Education at UCSB in 2006.
As an elementary school teacher in LAUSD for the last 7 years, I always strive to provide quality education that is child-centered, hands-on, & goal-oriented in a safe, warm, and caring atmosphere. I use research and data to scaffold student learning.
In addition to elementary schools, I have also taught at tutoring centers and daycares (i.e. a UCLA daycare, a bilingual daycare, inner-city schools, Sylvan Education center, & a dual language school.) I have tutored students in grades K-12 on a 1:1 basis and also in a group setting at home or at learning centers.
As a pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade teacher for 4 years, I have a plethora experience in teaching all aspects of phonics: letter recognition, sound/letter correspondence, phonemic awareness, rhyming, syllabic awareness, segmentation, blending, spelling, pronunciation, which will all lead to developing good reading and comprehension skills. It is crucial for students to master all of these fundamental concepts in order to be able to read books/signs/articles in the English language. I am able to break down the learning of phonics and make it fun for emergent readers or new learners of English. I speak other languages, so I am able to pinpoint what the unique phonetic differences are in English. I am also able to show my students the Greek or Latin influences that make up the phonetic patterns in our English system.
I have played piano ever since I was 6 years old. I love Mozart, Beethoven, and most of all Saint-Saens. I can teach piano to young students as I often tutor my own nephews. Moreover, I also have training in musical theory. I also play cello and violin too!
I always tell my students that the secret to academic success is having the right tools. Even though it is important to read a lot and understand math concepts, it is even more crucial to be able to find information when needed as well as to organize our daily life and set priorities and boundaries.
As an elementary teacher who is focused on the whole child, I want my students to excel in study skills and not just in school. Thus, I train my students on how to use dictionaries/ the internet, timers/technology/calendars/planners, resolution charts, engage in personal reflections, manage stress and conflict, and set up accountability with peers.
Ultimately, it is my desire for my students to be able to gain study skills and tools that will help them to be resourceful throughout college, in their careers, and in all areas of life.
