I graduated from Harvard University cum laude with a double major in English and Visual Studies (photography and film making). Since that time, I have made a professional career out of working in the film and media business for non-profit as well as for corporate audiences. The heart of my media work stems from the “English” side of my major, creative development: writing the right letter of introduction, developing and then describing a concept, researching and then putting together a proposal, and editing unscripted dialogue so that it flows and tells a story.
In this capacity, I have also become a tutor and collaborator for many colleagues who, although they are highly adept at the technology needed to turn a creative idea in to reality, lack the verbal skills to prepare and pitch their ideas. As my reputation as a wordsmith grew, I began to tutor and edit written works outside the field of media: copy editing cover letters, evaluating and proofreading full-length fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, helping non-English speakers (mainly French) write and speak more fluently.
My work with adults quickly extended to working with younger people, including students with learning disabilities such as ADD and students for whom English is a second language. I help students with the full gamut of English-related assignments--comprehending literature, reviewing the basics of grammar, graduated vocabulary building (using the Johnson O’Connor workbook series and SAT 500 essential word flashcards), crafting college entrance essays, establishing study skills and organizing homework assignments, or any particular project that they need help mastering. I make a point of remaining completely up-to-date on acceptable grammar usage, referring frequently to reference books such as the 15th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, Fowler's Modern English Usage, and Amy Einhorn’s The Copyeditor’s Handbook.
Personally, I would describe myself as outgoing, friendly, patient, and someone with a sense of humor. I am as passionate about helping people reach the goals they have set for themselves as I am about the subjects I teach.
