I am a Mechanical EIT with over eight years of experience as a private tutor. I specialize in engineering subjects such as structural analysis, dynamics, and fluid mechanics. I also tutor the mathematics needed to understand finite element methods.

My tutoring style varies from student to student, depending on what works for each individual. In general, I try to make the best of your time. This means that I focus more on concepts that are crucial to your success. My lessons are broken into parts that are easy to understand; together, these parts communicate complex ideas.

I can provide a quiet study room equipped with whiteboards for tutoring; this location is near the Kendall/MIT red line stop. I am also available for online tutoring.

Emma’s subjects

I frequently tutor calculus, and I have studied it from many angles. In high school, I scored 5/5 on both AP Calculus AB and BC examinations. At MIT, I aced multivariable calculus. I have also taken mathematical analysis, and it has given me insight into the theoretical development of calculus.

Classes I have tutored:
BU MA123 - Calculus I
NEU MATH1231 - Calculus for Business and Economics
NEU MATH1341 - Calculus I
NEU MATH1342 - Calculus II

Discrete Math

While at MIT, I took several discrete math classes covering number theory, graph theory, combinatorics, and probability.

Classes I have tutored:
MIT 6.042 - Mathematics for Computer Science

Electrical Engineering

I have much experience working with electronics and teaching circuits. I have designed circuits for school projects and for my professional work, built my own loudspeaker crossovers, and upgraded the wiring in my vintage car. I have also taught Maxwell's equations, Kirchoff's laws, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, capacitors, diodes, and ideal op-amps. My approach is hands-on; students are encouraged to use my breadboard, meters, signal generator and parts to build and test their own circuits.

Classes I have tutored:
MIT 6.01 - Intro to EECS
Suffolk University ECE105 - Circuit Theory I

Linear Algebra

I took linear algebra at MIT, and the concepts I learned reappeared ubiquitously throughout my engineering coursework. Because of this, I am very familiar with both the theory and engineering applications. I taught an informal introduction to linear algebra class and also have experience tutoring undergraduate-level linear algebra.

Classes I have tutored:
MIT 18.06 - Linear Algebra
University of Phoenix MTH360 - Linear Algebra

Mechanical Engineering

I am a certified mechanical EIT in MA. The certification process involves passing the FE, an eight hour exam that tests competency in mechanical engineering topics such as statics, dynamics, vibrations, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials.

Classes I have tutored:
MIT 8.03 - Vibrations and Waves
BU ENG BE 436 - Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics
NEU CIVE5522 - Structural Analysis 2
UMass Amherst CE357 - Elementary Fluid Mechanics

I specialize in the structural analysis of trusses, beams, and frames. I am very familiar with conjugate beam theory, the load displacement relationships, force method, displacement method, moment-distribution method, stiffness method, and energy methods. I have also studied the development of the constitutive equations through tensor algebra. I also tutor introductory statics and dynamics. Got a pulley problem? I can help you understand how to solve it.

Classes I have tutored:
MIT 8.01 - Classical Mechanics
MIT 8.03 - Vibrations and Waves
NEU CIVE5522 - Structural Analysis 2

Makes hard subjects seem much easier to grasp. Emma did a fantastic job at breaking different problems down. She wouldn't hesitate for a second to jump up and draw out the problem for me while talking me through each step. She allowed me to understand the bigger picture so that smaller details didn't seem so intimidating anymore. She did a fantastic job at helping me prepare for my physics midterm, which I went into feeling very confident than ...
