My name is Brianna and I am a Ph.D student in biomechanics at Harvard University. I recently received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship supporting my proposed graduate research, and last year I was named a Goldwater Scholar for my scientific research on equine functional morphology. I have tutored formally and informally in the sciences, and my background in writing scientific papers as well as creative writing means I can help you with writing too.
I received a perfect score on the GRE Verbal Reasoning (critical reading) section and a 5.5 of 6 in the Analytical Writing (essay) section. If you need help with studying methods or test-taking skills for virtually any subject, but especially science or the GRE, I would be happy to share the strategies I have developed over the years to help me ace virtually every test I take.
I am a very friendly and enthusiastic teacher interested in finding out exactly which areas are causing trouble, what study methods appear to be working, and developing an individualized strategy to solve your problems. I will work with what you want out of the tutoring, whether it is a better basic knowledge of material or higher test scores. If I need to teach something six different ways, I will, and I love helping people reach their goals--whether it's a long-term deep understanding or just an "A" in the class. I will tutor high school through postgraduate work and adjust teaching style as necessary.
Please get in touch and let me know what areas you'd like to improve. I would love to help out!
With four years of research experience in a vertebrate paleontology lab and an A+ in a notoriously difficult lab-intensive course, I know my way around skeletons (particularly mammalian ones).
I can help you learn:
- The names of bones and their parts
- How to tell right from left on isolated bones
- How to tell what kind of animal a bone came from
- How to infer function from a bone (functional morphology)
- How to identify isolated bones
Five years of a Biology major, including an intense coursework focus on evolution and ecology, make me an ideal tutor for almost all biology classes. I also offered peer tutoring and co-taught labs for a Biochemistry and Genetics course.
I am particularly skilled in Evolution, Ecology, Vertebrate Paleontology, Genetics, and writing biological science papers; ask me about other subjects and we'll discuss.
As a native English speaker with experience tutoring international students and an inordinate fondness for literature, I can help you with whatever you need. For speaking tutoring I focus on conversational flow, correcting mispronunciations or improper grammar but always encouraging you to keep going (after all, that's the best way to learn). In reading/writing I always start with subjects you are already interested in, which makes the work more enjoyable for both of us!
I received a perfect score (170) in the Verbal Reasoning section of the new GRE and a 5.5 of 6 in the writing. When it comes to test strategy and identifying systematic errors that, if improved, can bring your score up tremendously, I am your tutor. I will design practice problem sets, help you create a study schedule, and provide frequent feedback to help you approach the test in the best way possible.
I have caught and fixed major errors in everything from high school senior papers to scientific papers and grand proposals. Nowhere will you find a sharper eye or a keener ear for awkward sentences, misused phrases, and rogue commas.
I began to hone my skills in public speaking with two years on my high school's forensics and debate team, competing in extemporaneous speaking and team public debate. Since then I have given a poster presentation at an international scientific meeting, presented 15-minute talks at science outreach events and a research symposium, and given countless successful classroom presentations. I am most familiar with PowerPoint and plain (no props) presentations. I can help you overcome nerves, learn strategies to remember your material without notes, create more effective visual support, and hold the audience's attention throughout your speech.
I took the SAT only once and received stellar scores on both Reading and Writing. Standardized tests require a patient attention to both strategy and content knowledge, and I excel at both in the word-based portions of the SAT. I will work to help you identify systematic errors of understanding or approach, design question sets or exercises to rapidly correct those errors, and help you check your understanding so you know you are progressing.
I took the SAT only once and received a stellar score for Writing, missing only 2 multiple choice questions in the whole test. Standardized tests require a patient attention to both strategy and content knowledge, and I excel at both in the word-based portions of the SAT. If you work with me, you will practice not just essay writing but the all-important outline at the beginning, which will help you calmly respond to the prompt and dash off a high-scoring essay without breaking a sweat.
Writing was my first love, before even science. I have years of experience writing both fiction and nonfiction, including a year in a highly competitive creative writing program at my university, and my scientific work has been published in academic journals. Whether you are looking for help structuring a short story, major overhauls on a paper that needs some serious help, or are feeling overwhelmed by the behemoth of a thesis you need to write, I can help. I will always work to make sure you understand what we are doing and why so you can recreate the process on your own in the future.
