Adobe Photoshop

From Elements to Photoshop CS5, I will introduce you to the functions and concepts behind the Photoshop phenomenon!

If you have never used it, it is as interesting as you may have heard.

If you know the fundamentals, I can help you use some of the more advanced features of the program like working with layers, basics of color spaces and outputs for web and print, understanding the workspace, embedding watermarks and using filters for creative and functional enhancement of your images.

Dreamweaver

Working in the Dreamweaver environment can be challenging - it requires interests as diverse as a visual aesthetic, some graphic design background or knowledge, and a willingness to wear two hats at once - one to design graphically, and one to understand the conventions of html and css. I go over principles of each of these areas, plus go in-depth about the necessity of using proper html structure, writing css rules and the ever evolving conventions for designing scalable, responsive web sites.

ESL/ESOL

As a teacher of English as a second language I work with the student to improve vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, sentence construction and general understanding of English. I include the subtle differences between written and spoken English. I assist non-native English speakers with everyday writing, as well as business and academic writing by teaching awareness of the most common errors of syntax and spelling. I customize all lessons to the student's specific needs, whether social, professional or academic in nature.

General Computer

I have over 15 years' experience teaching general computer skills. I've worked teaching technical skills to adults with disabilities, to teenagers, to seniors and to technophobes (those just a little wary of technology but who want to learn). I built my first computer (from scratch) in 1993 and have had a passion for technology ever since!

HTML

I started creating web sites when HTML was the only language available (in those days, HTML was for making links in a body of text) and now use and teach Dreamweaver, Komodo, WordPress and the MAMP / WAMP / Apache server environment to create web sites. My contracts have included sites for artists, photographers, state and city governments and private concerns.

Learning web design is a matter of understanding enough about how the code works in the background to be able to get the most out of a page creation program like Dreamweaver. I have tutored students taking undergraduate web design class at UMass and Bentley and the graduate web design class at BU.I also regularly work with small business owners who manage their own sites.

Macintosh

Whether you are moving from Windows to Mac, or just aren't the type of person to go to the Apple store for help, I can work with you to help you love and appreciate your Mac and get the most out of it. It is an intuitive system, but if you aren't familiar with it, the navigation and logic can be a bit puzzling! I am a firm believer in learning terminology first (in order to ask questions the "right" way) and then going on to customizing lessons so you can quickly learn what is most important to you.

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a great presentation tool when used well. You can also use it as a reporting tool when a traditional written report is not necessarily required. PowerPoint can include graphics, photos, text, charts and graphs among other media. The skills required are a bit of a combination of word processing (understanding fonts, text styles and document elements) with a bit of graphic design (using photos, incorporating color schemes and branding elements) and some personal creativity. There are some good basic rules to follow when constructing PowerPoint presentations, and some good "rules are made to be broken" advice can be incorporated too!

Microsoft Windows

I've been teaching the Windows operating system since Windows 95, and command line MS-DOS before that. I've worked with all of the 90's Windows systems, NT (as a server/network and desktop system), ME, XP, Vista and Windows 7. I have certification in GIS which by its nature involves some Windows networking management. Additionally I have experience teaching Microsoft Office for Windows as well as the Adobe Suite of application for this OS.

Microsoft Word

Even though the look of Microsoft Word has changed over the years, its basic functions have not. Still the preferred choice of document creators and letter writers, Word also has features that allow for multi-user editing and comments, as well as the ability to insert various media like photographs and active web links. I tutor in beginning to intermediate levels on this topic.

Photography

Learning photography is partly learning that it is combination of art and science and working to understand those qualities and how they work together. It's a really rewarding skill to have. It's very satisfying to have the confidence to go to an event, a family gathering, a wedding or birthday party and know that the photos you take can be offered to be shared with others.
The art is is in learning about the 4 c's of photography - color, composition, cropping and creativity. The science is in learning about the math that governs shutter speeds and apertures as well as something about the properties of light. Did you know that light has a color temperature and that it is measured in degrees of Kelvin? That's why photos taken indoors in florescent light have a greenish cast - they are a different color temperature (a cooler one) than those taken outdoors.
As for my background, I started as a photojournalist right out of high school, working for a newspaper well before there were digital cameras. We spent more time in the darkroom than we did taking the assignments. I still prefer the quality and properties of film to even the best digital cameras but I use both. I have a degree in art. I use Photoshop on a daily basis for editing and try to keep my image manipulation limited to what I could do in a darkroom, otherwise I label it as photo art rather than photography. I'm a teeny bit of a purist that way. I'm very comfortable with technology, both Mac and PC platforms and am also comfortable with color work flow (that's working with an image from camera to printer and getting consistent results). I like natural lighting and environmental portraits (people in their natural environment) and musicians are a favorite subject of mine. I live and work in Cambridge, MA.

Web Design

I started creating web sites when HTML was the only language available (in those days, HTML was for making links in a body of text) and now use and teach Dreamweaver, Komodo, WordPress and the MAMP / WAMP / Apache server environment to create web sites. My contracts have included sites for artists, photographers, state and city governments and private concerns.

I have tutored students taking the undergraduate web design class at Bentley and the graduate web design class at BU as well as small business owners who manage their own sites.

Writing

I enjoy academic writing at all levels, and especially the college level. But the questions about how to shape a paper are often the same, regardless of the writing level. Who is your audience, and how are you going to present your material to their perceived knowledge level, while engaging your reader and illuminating your topic in a unique and interesting way?
I tutor imagery as well as writing and together they shape the reality of our individual worlds. I enjoy working with students on reading, writing and comprehension, and discussing the ideas that a teacher is presenting to the student. There are always so many interesting and different ways of approaching a topic. I think I'm especially good at understanding how an individual learns, tailoring a lesson to their style, and working to enhance someone's natural writing style while making it fun and engaging. I have an advanced degree in Public Affairs / International Relations and have experience writing international research projects as well as traditional essays and theses.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
