I am a licensed teacher who has worked with students over the last 20 years in K-5. I have enjoyed working with students that have struggled with reading and or math skills. I have also worked with students that had have learning disabilities i.e: attention deficit disorder, Autism anywhere along the spectrum. I work on reading vocabulary, diction, and comprehension, and working with a student that has some reading difficulties try to find books and materials that will spark the students interest. There are also many games that are played to help the student develop his or her reading ability.
I also do this with math, I show the students how math is used everyday and in many different types of jobs and careers and to be successful in those jobs, you have to be able to do most often very simple math equations. Find the students strengths and weaknesses.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

When working with the ADD/ADHD students in my class I would work with them one-on-one or in small group. I would present them with a problem and then I would set the timer for them to complete the problem. When first beginning with them they would get a great amount of time to complete one problem. As the year went on they would get shorter amounts of time. The students would also get smaller amounts of work to be done. They were also given time during their work to be able to read or play with a chosen item for a given amount of time and then would have to come back to the task at hand.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary school teacher for over 20 years. I have worked with students all ages k - 8th grades. I have worked in the classroom as a one-on-one aide and as a teacher. I also did tutoring and state prep work with small groups students to prepare them for the state given exam. I made games and charts for them to look at and study. Games were memory, jeopardy, and others.

Phonics

In the state of Virginia, we were required as teachers to give the PALS testing for phonics. For those students who didn't pass the assessment, there were specific lessons designed to help each student. I was trained by the UVA staff on how to teach these lessons. This past year, I was required to use the Fundamentals Phonics lessons as a daily tool in my classroom.

Engaging and responsive to the interests of the student. — Lisa has really been a terrific tutor for our entering first grader. She's been working with him on strengthening his literacy skills, and brings the right mix of patience and push that he needed. Lisa worked to understand our son's interests and choose books and topics that engaged his imagination and interest, and kept him focused on the task at hand - not the easiest thing to do for a six year ...
