My relationship with the arts has been a lifelong one. I grew up taking art classes, and pursued my love of drawing, painting, and printmaking through high school and college. I received my BFA in Studio Art from the University of Rochester in 2010. Most recently in 2013, I earned my Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (SMFA), where I have accepted a post-graduate teaching fellowship in the Print and Paper department for 2013-2014 school year, teaching undergraduate level screen printing courses.
I began working as a Teacher's Assistant during my undergraduate career, co-teaching two introductory printmaking courses. At SMFA, I gained experience as Graduate Teaching Assistant for multiple screen printing courses, and co-taught a five week intensive summer course with another graduate student. I have worked with students at many different skill levels, providing me the valuable experience of approaching students' practices from different entry points. My goal has always been to identify what the student really wishes to accomplish, and work towards that goal. Teaching at an undergraduate level involves technical instruction, but also a degree of conceptual instruction, and I thoroughly enjoy helping people to understand their impulses, their artistic and aesthetic choices, and to know why they make what they make. Overall, I aim to help developing artists, both serious and hobby artists, to improve their technical skills and gain a sense of direction by creating exercises that target weaknesses, and working towards set goals.
As an artist, I work primarily in printmaking, sculpture, installations, and site-specific projects. Printing methods I am proficient with include screen printing, relief (woodcut and lino-cut), and lithography. As a screen printer, I have printed work for many Boston artists and university faculty, including a piece in collaboration with Mark Cooper at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and most recently a piece for Magdalena Campos-Pons, to be displayed at the Cuban Pavilion of the 2013 Venice Biennale. I employ various drawing methods and painting methods within printmaking and on their own. Traditional painting techniques include watercolor, gouache, ink, acrylic, and oil. My ongoing experience of designing posters has forced me to maintain a professional aptitude with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well.
I hold a BFA and MFA degree, and have over twenty years of drawing experience. Regardless of the final medium, all of my artwork begins with drawing. My tutoring methods involve designing exercises or assignments focusing on improving hand skills and accomplishing goals set forth on behalf of the student, making the medium work for you. I have experience in life drawing, technical drawing, perspective study, architectural rendering, illustration, and hand lettering, with a large variety of different drawing materials.
I hold a BFA in Studio Art, and recently received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), in Boston, where I have taught. I have almost twenty years of painting experience. My tutoring methods involve designing exercises or assignments focusing on tackling the student's identifiable weaknesses, expanding the student's breadth and depth of techniques and tools, and accomplishing goals set forth on behalf of the student, making the medium work for the student. I am most well versed in watercolor, gouache, and ink painting, but am also proficient with acrylic and oil.
