While at Boston Conservatory I worked as a liberal arts tutor as well as a Music History
teaching assistant. I have classroom experience with ages 5 to college (and beyond), and have worked as a teacher in Musical Theater settings, general music
, small choir, private piano
. I am comfortable teaching any style of music, music notation and recording software, listening skills, music analysis, and audition practices. I am currently enrolled at the Longy School of Music of Bard College for a post-Masters performance diploma.
As a private instructor, I strive to delve deep into the personality of each student to find not only their actual strengths and weaknesses, but their self-perceived ones as well. I try to teach as much as possible through demonstration and action, as I firmly believe that focused participation is the most rigorous way to internalize any difficult concept. In my experience, the most important facet of education is attuning the student to the joys of a challenge, rather than the stress of it. My education philosophy
is grounded in the writings of John Dewey and F.M. Alexander: we need to approach learning with the whole mind and body: the eager, open mind of a relaxed person can triumph over challenges that may have once seemed insurmountable. At the core of my methods, I include aspects of meditation and mindfulness to help control anxiety and grant the confidence to approach any task, be it the specific ones which we study in our lessons, or any future educational endeavor. In our society the public education system is fragmented, and severely lacking in any sort of holistic, unified approach among disciplines, and our current culture too heavily emphasizes standardized tests and curriculums. This is to the detriment of the student's self-awareness and their own path to and love for knowledge which, as a teacher, I feel it is my duty to help students rediscover.
