Hello!
My name is Beth. I love working with students, particularly in the areas of English language acquisition, writing, and history.
I recently completed my Master of Education degree at Boston College. Over the past two years, I have taught history and English as a Second Language at local education organizations and high schools.
As part of my master's program, I learned how to design and develop effective lessons for history and ESL students. Over the course of my student-teaching, I became skilled at recognizing students' strengths and weaknesses and designing teaching strategies to build on those strengths and improve weaknesses. After completing coursework in teaching English language learners and bilingual student, I received a Teaching English Language Learners (TELL) certification. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College in 2010, majoring in History. I minored in Latin American studies and Hispanic literature. I speak Spanish proficiently, and some French and Portuguese.
ESL:
I work with students to improve ALL aspects of language acquisition (reading, writing, listening and speaking). I design instruction based on each student's specific strengths, weaknesses, needs, and goals. Grammar (sentence structure, noun/adjective/verb recognition, subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, etc.) plays a large role in my instruction. While it may be tedious and boring at times, it is important to master. Listening and conversation activities are also incorporated into lessons. I try to bring lessons and activities to life by incorporating students' interests.
HISTORY:
I have passed the Massachusetts state licensing exam for teaching history. Recently, I taught world history at the high school level, and I am also strongly familiar with U.S. history. In my work teaching history, I like to focus not only on specific facts and information, but also on the development of important life-long skills that can be taught using history as the vehicle.
I look forward to hearing from and working with you!
