My parents’ teaching that it is not just utilization but also the spread of knowledge that is key to man’s progress, had shaped my dream to become a teacher. Through the volunteer experiences and the jobs I held, I realized I have a penchant for teaching. My journey as a teacher started when I volunteered with an NGO in India, working with not-so privileged children and helping them reach a minimum standard to get them admitted into local municipal schools. It continued through substitute teaching in Lexington and Wilmington Public Schools to being a support teacher at Pincushion Hill Montessori School.
Tutoring children with medical issues has opened my eyes to the innate passion in children for learning. A 9th grader with Asperger’s syndrome pondering on how the laws of physics would have to manipulate in a world with infinite dimensions while he taught me the dragon language, dumbfounded me. The zeal of a 6 year old on learning the Hindi word for ‘love’, so that she could tell her grandparents that she loved them, was infectious. The commitment of a 17 year old to tutor in Honors Biology, Honor Anatomy and Physiology, Neurobiology and Psychology so that she does not fall behind for her nursing career through repeated visits to hospital for 4 years has touched my heart.
At my current position at Pincushion Hill Montessori School based in Ashland, MA, I shoulder roles of a science curriculum developer, after school/summer personnel and being a support staff. As a support staff, I assist the classroom teachers’ material making, transitions and preventing interruptions. Jointly with another support teacher, we run the Atlas program for the third years of Childrens House where they work with Montessori maps to make their own atlas. I prepare and aid in curriculum making for childcare days and afterschool activities. I have developed a three year cycle to boost the Childrens House science core curriculum. I hold weekly hands-on classes with groups of 4-10 children for 70 children. As per the directors’ wishes, a seed saving project has been instituted in the practical life section. I extensively make and adapt materials for Childrens house and Elementary steered from ‘Plant Lessons’ by Priscilla Spears. In the upcoming months, I will continue developing the botany program, help in fund-raising for the Audobon Society and hold a Science Enrichment program in afterschool.
The content tested on the ACT is mainly in the fields of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Having had my high school education in a schooling system in India, my math skills have been honed with a plethora of practice and understanding of the subject.
