For the past six years, I have taught high school English in private school settings. I love working with students, and particularly enjoy helping them in a one-one-one setting where I can truly understand and meet their individual needs. I specialize in helping students analyze literature and write about it in an organized, thoughtful manner. I can help students learn better reading comprehension techniques, stronger writing skills, and beneficial study habits. I spend a lot of time with students on writing mechanics, allowing them to see how they can organize their work in a logical and articulate manner.
I try to make reading and writing well a transparent process. I do not skip steps to expedite the process; I will show students through trial and error how to write well, and why I make the suggestions that I do. At the end of the process, I hope students produce work that is in his or her own voice--but a stronger and more confident voice, as the student has come to understand how to express his or her ideas clearly in writing.
I love teaching and I see tutoring as the best type of teaching. In a classroom setting, there are many things that get in the way of real learning. There may be too may students in a room for a teacher to focus specifically on one child's needs and interests. This is especially true when a student feels that the teacher is going too quickly or slowly for them. Grades also can interfere with real learning. And most importantly, it often feels like the teacher doesn't really know his or her students. As a tutor, I have the privilege of getting to know each and every one of my students and developing a relationship with him or her. I really enjoy getting to know people on an individual level--and that also makes me a better teacher, as I can tailor my instruction for each individual student. I can work at their pace, speak their language, use examples that relate to their interests, and come up with creative modes of instruction based on their needs. I hope to develop a strong personal and professional relationship with my students and their families.
