Hello! My name is Ria. I hold a Masters in Special Education from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor's of Art in English from UMASS Boston. I am currently an ELA teacher for middle and high school students in the Brookline area. Many of my students use up to three languages in their daily lives, which makes my literacy instruction exciting, albeit challenging. Because I work with a variety learners at different instructional levels, I am familiar with augmenting instruction for these students to meet their individual needs.

I am experienced with:

* developing and adapting developmentally appropriate literacy instruction for a variety students at different reading levels
* recognizing the difference between teaching English as a second language and as a content area subject
* direct teaching of accountable talk and listening skills for students' academic and social settings

Vocabulary

My capstone project during graduate school was a long-term instructional plan on vocabulary development strategies. Research shows that a large vocabulary is one of the best indicators of high reading comprehension rates. I have proven, enjoyable methods for students to learn vocabulary at a fast pace while retaining word meanings and correct usage.

Reading

Most of my experience with students has been teaching reluctant readers because they have not had success with reading in the past. I make reading instruction and comprehension fun and enjoyable to boost student confidence in their abilities. Each lesson is tailored to the individual student I am working with to ensure the appropriate pace and to take into account student preferences and interest when selecting texts.

English

I have worked as an ELA teacher for three years in the Boston Public School district, one of those years in a special education class room. My areas of strength include vocabulary development strategies, reading comprehension and reviewing the steps of the editing process with students.

SAT Reading

All of my experience with SAT and ACT test-prep is one on one, resulting a completely individualized lesson for each one of my students. I understand the importance of personalizing each study lesson for my students to best meet their academic needs.

Special Needs

I currently am a state licensed teacher in Special Education. My teaching license number is 432286. I received my Masters degree in Special Education from the University of Arizona in 2008.

ESL/ESOL

I am a MA state certified teacher in English Language Arts. I have worked with a diverse population of English Language Learners in an urban setting. Many of these students use up to three languages in their daily lives. This makes my literacy instruction exciting, albeit challenging. In addition to whole class instruction, I have also tutored ESL students one on one at the Boston School of Modern Languages located in Roslindale, MA.

Sign Language

I have worked as a certified teacher of the deaf at Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Boston, MA. For many of those students, ASL is their primary language and their language of instruction. I received my masters degree in special education and in order to earn my degree I had to pass two advanced level ASL classes. In high school, I took three years of ASL, followed by three more in college.
