For over 15 years now, I have been in the teaching field. Teaching has been for me an admirable career. Again Teaching Students from various cultural backgrounds has been a source of joy because I have been able to learn more and engage various teaching approaches in helping them to gain sufficient knowledge and understanding of their subject of interest. I commenced teaching immediately after my high school starting with personal management of Day Care/nursery School. I taught English, speaking, reading and writing skills to KG 3 school children.
Following the remarkable results of these children, some of their parents started to invite me to tutor their children at individual homes. In a week time I would tutor about 40 hours from one house to another as scheduled. I later progressed to tutoring students from a High school until I graduated from the University of Nigerian Nsukka. Many Students were calling from their homes and various quarters to request for tutorial lessons. Owing to high demand for tutorial lessons I teamed up with a group of Lecturers in Lagos to establish a tutorial School for preparation of students for different School examination and equipping them with Computer skills in Lagos Nigeria. Also I observed that a good number of students were failing their High School Diploma examinations, IELTS, ESOL and Science examinations due to inadequate information and approach questions in examinations. This need as well led to the establishment of this institution. The School named “Keystone Tutorial College” Lagos is growing, dynamic and existing until date in Lagos. Since its establishment in 2001, there have been uncountable testimonies of proven success of students.
After my University Education, I commenced full-time teaching with West Africa Theological Seminary, Ipaja Lagos Nigeria. West Africa Theological Seminary was an interdenominational institution designed to equip prospective Christian leaders and leaders who were already in the ministry. In this versatile institution, I came across students from different locations and with different cultural backgrounds. I was able to develop a very good teacher-student relationship with every member of my class. As I lecture and interact with them I was able to learn about other cultures.
My duties involved lecturing, lecture preparation, research, attending educational meetings, pre-registration of prospective students. I duties involved supervision of students projects. Examination supervision, marking examinations, assessment of task and examination assigned to each student. I also tutored many students in the use of computer, reading speaking skills, one to one tutorial with students assigned to me, mentoring, to mention but a few. I taught cross cultural studies, Religious studies, Ministry, Social Sciences, Study Skills, and Computer Skills as I have proficient computer skills having passed through European Computer driving License (ECDL).
While in the United Kingdom, with Protocols National, I lectured students from various educational background particularly individuals who experience difficulty speaking English language. I used the opportunity to teach English Language lessons and ESOL lessons to them. Most of the Students gained first class, after examination following the tutorial lessons. I employ different teaching approaches strategies such as class room instruction involving theory and practice, use of power point presentations and explanation, lecture method, discussion, demonstration, case studies, role playing, class participation, group study just to mention but few during my teaching sessions. I am proud that majority of the students I tutored have risen to become professionals such as lecturers for example in their various fields of endeavor.
Basically, I continue to support students until the gain thorough understanding of each subject. I understand that learning does not take place until a learner begins to “do” what he/she have learned. I believe that with me every student assigned is in good hands and will benefit from my teaching skills and approaches and eventually achieve desired learning goals.
