My name is Emily, and I've been tutoring in multiple subjects (literacy skills, English, math, history, social science, Spanish, SATs, college preparation) for almost a decade. This past year, I taught third grade in Boston Public Schools, and am finishing a master's in education at Boston College. I graduated a few years ago from Harvard College. I have also conducted sociological research supervised by Dr. Howard Gardner and worked at various educational non-profits in the Boston area. I've tutored privately for many years, and have excellent references; I would be more than happy to put you in touch with past and current students and their parents.
I have a great deal of experience working with students of all ages, interests, and abilities. I genuinely love teaching and getting to know every student. I enjoy working with kids who "hate school" as well as very driven, academic kids; I've tutored a whole spectrum, from non-reading second graders and ninth graders failing every subject to honors students looking for supplemental work purely out of interest. I also have mentored students whose needs were more related to motivation and confidence; oftentimes kids who are struggling are better able to connect with and learn from someone closer to their own age, who they feel understands what they're going through. I have five younger siblings, and relate well to students of all ages and stages.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you think I might be a good match for your child(ren). I'm happy to discuss my pedagogical approach, my experiences, or anything else you'd like to know. I typically meet with parents (and often their children) at a coffee shop or a library prior to beginning tutoring (free of charge, of course!), to make sure that it would be likely to be a good fit.
I tutor on weekday afternoons and evenings, and can travel (I have a car) within about a 25-minute radius of Brookline.
