Hi! My name is Sarah. I am an English graduate student at Boston College, and love tutoring students in subjects that I love and know best: writing, reading, and English literature. I have been a writing tutor for the past year at Boston College, where I help ESL, undergraduates, and graduate students on various writing assignments. I was also a reading and writing tutor as an undergraduate.
If you need a second pair of eyes for your writing, I can proofread and copyedit anything from a resume to a college admissions essay. I proofread professors' papers as an undergraduate, and I copyedited scholars' articles for a DC think tank (American Enterprise Institute) as part of an editorial internship.
While I have largely worked with college-age students professionally, I enjoy working with younger students. Having five younger siblings (one being autistic), I am used to interacting with children, as well as those with special needs.
In addition to English, piano is also one of my passions. I took piano lessons for 13 years and competed in local, state, and occasional world piano competitions for 7 years.
Thank you for your interest, and I hope to meet you!
I graduated with Honors from Brigham Young University in English Literature, and am currently pursuing a graduate degree in English at Boston College. I have also presented papers at the University of Maryland-College Park, University of Texas-Arlington, and Moravian College.
I currently help ESL students with their assignments, and explain grammatical principles throughout the process. I also lived in Hong Kong for a year and a half, where I taught free English classes once a week.
As an English graduate student, I have taken courses in a variety of literary fields. I am currently taking these graduate-level literature classes at Boston College:
Stuart Literature and Culture: British Literature from 1600-1640.
American Renaissance Literature: 19th Century American Literature.
George Eliot Seminar
History and Theory of the Personal Essay: An overview of reading essays ranging from Virginia Woolf to Joan Didion.
While an undergraduate, I also took the following courses:
Senior Seminar: Edmund Spenser and the Faerie Queene.
Senior Seminar: John Donne's Poetry
Shakespeare: An overview of eight of his plays.
19th-century Romanticism: Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Blake.
20th century British Literature: Forster, Woolf, and Joyce.
I have taken lessons for 13 years, and competed in local, state, and occasional world piano competitions for 7 years.
I currently proofread students' work at Boston College. I was previously an editorial assistant at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Enterprise Institute in Washington DC. I also have an undergraduate minor in publishing, which included several classes in proofreading and editing.
As a graduate student in English, I have been trained to be a close reader, as well as be acquainted with a wide scope of texts.
Patient and very helpful. — My son has difficulty focusing on writing assignments. Sarah was very helpful in getting him to think further ahead about the process and in improving the organization and style of his drafts. ...
