I am a doctoral student at Boston College working toward a PhD in Biology with a concentration in Immunology. My passion for science drove me to pursue a career in research, but one of my favorite things about being an academic is working with students. Watching them grow academically is extremely rewarding.

I've been tutoring/teaching and working in science for almost five years. My experience is with students at the high school/college level. I am able to help with all levels of math through college Calculus, but most of my focus has been the sciences; Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Genetics. I've also taught some ACT, SAT and general GRE preparation.

Because I study science and perform experiments every day, I can often give examples of how what they're learning in their textbook is applied in research. Additionally, I can relate to their demanding schedules as I myself am still a student.

I have an extensive background in all levels of math through college-level Calculus. I began tutoring students more than 5 years ago and have ample experience helping students understand mathematical concepts. Furthermore, working in scientific research requires that I apply many Algebra I skills everyday, which allows me to give students real-life examples of how the material is utilized.

Algebra II courses teach students how to solve complex problems using the skills they gained during Algebra I. The homework assignments are long and involved, and I've found students tend to have the tools they need to solve Algebra II problems, but are intimidated by the complexity and unsure where to begin. I attempt to show students how to approach the problems and solve them step-by-step.

Biochemistry can be incredibly intimidating. The name itself probably scares most students away. However, Biochemistry is the science behind how the processes of life work. Studying this particular subject helps us understand physiological mechanisms so that we can make advancements in research and medicine. I have helped many students understand the concepts of Biochemistry during my time substitute teaching and tutoring. My Bachelor's degree is in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and I work in a research lab where I use a lot of this material on a daily basis. I am extremely familiar with these difficult topics and have considerable experience explaining them on a basic level.

A large portion of learning Biology involves contributing material to memory. I believe this is made much easier when students understand the big picture behind biological concepts. Biology is the study of how life is made possible, and I have great passion for this subject. I have a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and am currently applying for PhD programs to pursue graduate work in Cellular Biology. Between substitute teaching and tutoring, I have gained significant experience helping students of all ages understand the many levels of Biology. Additionally, I work in scientific research and study Biology myself on a daily basis. I have found students can really benefit from being given real life examples of how Biology is applied in their daily lives. I believe this allows them to connect with the material and improve their understanding of the concepts.

Calculus is known to be an extremely difficult subject for many students. I believe this is because unlike any other math course, Calculus involves a sort of abstract way of thinking. In order for a student to be successful in Calculus they must know how to interpret results to difficult problems. This is what I've tried to help students learn how to do in my experience as a substitute teacher and math tutor. I have worked with students at the high school and college levels of calculus and am very comfortable explaining this material.

I have extensive experience tutoring students in high school chemistry. Like many science courses, chemistry can be very intimidating and is difficult for many students to grasp. Because I work in a research lab, I use chemistry on a daily basis and have a very good understanding of the material. I like to give students real life examples for how and why I apply the concepts they're learning to what I do in the lab every day. I feel that with these examples the chemistry becomes more interesting and they are able to better understand the material.

I believe it is important to spark an interest in science at a very young age before it gets too complicated and intimidating. This particular subject can be boring and hard for elementary students so, in an effort to keep them tuned in, I like to give them examples of how science is applied in every day life. I work in scientific research and have significant experience tutoring young students in elementary science. I am very comfortable with this material and have developed a strategy to try and keep them interested so that the material might seem a bit easier.

Genetics can be a tough subject, but it is very important to understand the science of heredity. I work in transplant research and utilize the concepts of genetics on a daily basis when determining potential organ donors. I have sufficient experience tutoring both high school and college level genetics after working at a tutoring center and substitute teaching for nearly 3 years. I am very comfortable with this material and truly enjoy helping students understand these concepts.

Geometry can be really hard for students, especially those who had trouble with Algebra. I have extensive experience tutoring high school geometry students. Through substitute teaching and tutoring over the past three years I have become very comfortable explaining Geometry at the high school level. I've found that reviewing the basic Algebra concepts they need to solve the geometric problems helps them understand the material.

Preparing for the GRE is best done by getting used to the types of questions they ask. The level of math is approximately college algebra so it can be tough, but whats more is learning how to approach the questions. They do not simply ask for solving problems, but involve quantitative reasoning. I took the GRE under the previous scoring system and received a score of 710 out of a weighted 800 Additionally, the writing portion of the test is best studied for by practicing writing solid essays and arguments in the allotted period of time. I believe the limit for analyzing the argument is 30 minutes and the essay is 45 minutes. It can be tough to formulate a decent essay under pressure so it requires practice to put together a good argument that is coherent and well-written. I received a score of 4.5 out of 6 on the writing and have significant experience helping students write essays from working at tutoring centers and substitute teaching.

Microbiology can be a very tough subject for students to understand. Studying microorganisms is not easy, but completely necessary. We have learned so much about our own physiology from observing microorganisms and how they replicate and survive. My bachelor's degree is in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and I work in a transplant research lab at Massachusetts General Hospital. I utilize microorganisms to produce recombinant proteins for use in models that help us to better understand transplantation tolerance and rejection. Additionally, I have nearly three years of formal tutoring and substitute teaching experience helping students understand all levels of math and science, including Microbiology. I am extremely comfortable with these concepts and like to give my students examples of how I use the procedures they're learning in the lab on a regular basis. My hope is that with concrete examples of how these concepts are applied they will be able to better understand the material.

Microsoft Excel is a great program to use for organizing data into tables and graphs. I use Excel almost every day at my job where I work as a Research Technician at Massachusetts General Hospital to analyze raw data. Once comfortable, it is a very user-friendly program that is extremely helpful. It enables statistical analysis and has a wide variety of formulas to employ for lots of different applications.

Once comfortable, it is very easy to work with and offers a plethora of benefits. I work as a Research Technician at Massachusetts General Hospital and I use Microsoft Word every day for writing up experiments, data analysis, writing manuscripts and more.

Organic Chemistry is one of the most difficult subjects for students to understand. It involves a lot of memorizing structures and reactions which can seem tedious if one doesn't understand the purpose of these reactions. Because I work in biochemical research I am able to give students concrete examples of how I use and reference these types of reactions regularly in the lab. I have ample experience working with students on these concepts through formal tutoring and substitute teaching. I like to teach how and why this material is useful so that I might spark a bit of an interest in my students. I believe anything is easier to understand if we know its purpose and are intrigued by the concept.

Physical science, usually presented at the elementary/junior high level, is very basic science. The concepts that are taught in this course mostly involve the different layers of earth, kingdoms of species etc.. This type of material is usually learned through memorization which can be boring and tedious. Because I work in science I am able to elaborate on these topics a bit and try to make them a little more interesting. My goal is to spark some interest in the material and I find that it becomes easier to remember for quizzes and/or tests. I have nearly three years of formal tutoring experience during which I helped students with physical science and I truly enjoy explaining these topics.

Prealgebra is an extremely important subject for students to understand. The concepts learned in this course are used in all of the advanced math classes that will follow so it is essential that students build a strong understanding of this material. I have extensive experience working with junior high and high school students on prealgebra after several years of formal tutoring and substitute teaching. I have developed a strategy for explaining these concepts to students that I believe is very successful. I am very comfortable with this subject and very much enjoy working with students at this level of math.

Precalculus covers a wide variety of tough concepts. I have gained ample experience working with students at this level through both formal tutoring and substitute teaching.
