I am a graduate of Hamilton College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry and a minor in English. In addition to my love of science I possess passions for literature, singing, skiing, and gardening. During my tenure at Hamilton, I served as a laboratory teaching assistant, starting my freshman year, while also working as a tutor and grader in biochemistry. In addition to this work I was a paid researcher through the summers and several academic semesters.

Before my college experience, I served as a volunteer in programs for elementary aged children while I was in high school, continuing this experience during two of my collegiate summers. I love working with students of any age, and am always passionate about inspiring a love of knowledge and learning.

Through all of these experiences, I have formed a teaching strategy that achieves results in two ways. First, your performance and knowledge of whatever subject we are working on will dramatically improve. Second, but of equal or greater value, your ability to learn new subject matter and apply critical thinking skills to new material will reach new heights. I work to achieve both of these goals by pushing my students to think for themselves and personalizing methods of studying and teaching for each student. We all have our own style of learning, and you will be most effective when you understand your own strengths and weaknesses.

I hope you will give me the chance to work with you or your student!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I am knowledgeable about testing strategy and adept at understanding standardized test questions. I received a score of 740 on my SAT reading.

Algebra 1

I first started learning about algebra in 7th grade and now, as a third year biochem student, algebra is second nature to me. I am very experienced with this subject.

Algebra 2

I have many years of practice with algebra 2. I took algebra 2 in sophomore year of high school and have continued to use these skills throughout my college career. I have many tricks and tools to help students successfully understand algebra.

Biochemistry

I have a B.A. in biochemistry from Hamilton College. I understand proteins, thermodynamics, Michaelis Menten kinetics, biochemical pathways, enzyme reaction mechanisms, and genetics. I am confident I can help you in any area that you are struggling with.

Biology

I have taken biology classes since my freshman year of high school. I have been exposed to a wide range of topics from microbiology to environmental biology. I have taken college courses on general biology, animal classification, invertebrate biology, basic endocrinology and immunology, genetics, and biochemistry. I am good at learning new material and setting up study techniques for material in any area.

Chemistry

As a third year biochem major, I have taken all of the intro science courses from basic chemistry through organic and biochemistry. I love chemistry as a subject and love helping kids to understand and appreciate it.

Elementary Math

I am very experienced with elementary math. I use this basic math everyday in my physics and biochem courses. I love working with younger kids, and I am good at engaging them with the task at hand.

Elementary Science

As a biochem student, I have a strong understanding of basic scientific principles from elementary school through high school. I love to work with younger kids and get them interested in science because I am truly passionate about it.

Literature

I love reading and literary analysis. I understand what high school teachers as well as college professors want in a literary analysis and can help you become better at understanding the true meanings in a work of literature. I also have materials and suggested reading to help with digging deeper into great writings.

Physical Science

As a Biochem student I have a strong foundation in basic scientific principles. I have taken science courses from 7th grade through my present position as a third year biochem major. I have many study skills that I can share with students to help them understand and memorize the knowledge necessary for basic science classes.

Reading

I am passionate about reading, and believe that it is the most important skill to gaining success. I deeply feel that helping kids with reading and understanding what they read is one of the most important things anyone can do, and I approach the task with enthusiasm, patience, and skill.

SAT Reading

I am a very good test taker and I am adept at understanding standardized test questions. I have many tricks to help students approach vocabulary questions and reading comprehension questions in addition to general test taking strategy. I received a 740 on my own SAT Reading section, and am happy to pass the success on to others.
