Teaching Philosophy:
All students can succeed in an encouraging, diverse, judgment-free, and safe learning environment. I believe that learning in such an environment provides a safe-haven for freethinking, risk-taking, and confidence. As an educator there are four essential elements I provide to help foster this environment. First, I implement a holistic approach to learning by facilitating knowledge, rather than dictating it; and by guiding my students to work towards their full potential, both academically and within their community. Secondly, I provide and promote a safe and respectable learning environment for all by setting clear and consistent models and rules of behavior that my students and myself must adhere to. Third, I strive to build strong relationships with each student in order to uncover and understand differences. Through uncovering these differences I accommodate and tailor multi-sensory learning experiences beneficial to the entire class. Finally, I deliver a mixture of enthusiastic, encouraging, and challenging curriculum-based lessons that promote self-discovery, sharpen collaborative skills, and increase critical thinking.
Furthermore, it is my belief that through teaching English Language Arts I enable my students to discover the importance of literature by creating meaning, through modes of critical thinking, as it relates to the individual, the community, and the historical and cultural context of the time in which the text was written. Through these discoveries I encourage my students to recognize concrete personal connections to the text and to widen their understanding, perception of, and consideration towards cultural, social, gender, and historical differences.
