Practicing Engineer Tutors Math & Physics Students

I have worked over 20 years as an engineer. I understand how science and math are used in industry. I like to help students understand the importance of trying to determine if answers make sense. I am a parent of two high school students so I understand the stress involved in trying to equip them for college. I obtained my Master's degree from MIT and my bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota. I was employed my junior and senior years to tutor undergraduates. Most of my tutoring experience was with physics and calculus material. There are a number of aspects of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus that I have continued to use and are fundamental to calculus and other advanced mathematics. I have continued to work with teens as I have coached about 10 years in youth sports. I am a non-smoker and I'm not allergic to pets.

Algebra 1

I took algebra in junior high school. I have been able to use the principles over and over in calculus.

Algebra 2

As long as algebra is taught in school, there will be prayer in school.

Calculus

I took calculus in high school and several levels of calculus in college. I also took 3D calculus at MIT. While tutoring in my junior and senior year of college, I tutored freshman in calculus.

Geometry

I took geometry in high school. I have been able to use the principles over and over in my career as a practicing engineer.

Physics

I took physics in high school and a year's worth of physics at the University of Minnesota. While in my junior and senior year of college, I tutored freshmen in physics.

Prealgebra

Algebra is used in calculations in carpentry, general construction, pouring concrete, estimating, painting, measuring.

Precalculus

I didn't take any precalculus courses but all the material in this subject is covered by calculus.

Trigonometry

So is trigonometry really relevant in your day to day activities? You bet it is. Let's explore areas where this science finds use in our daily activities and how we can use this to resolve problems we might encounter. Although it is unlikely that one will ever need to directly apply a trigonometric function in solving a practical issue, the fundamental background of the science finds usage in an area which is passion for many - music!
