I am currently the Chinese (Mandarin) language teacher for two home-schooled students, and the private tutor of a student that studies Chinese at a prestigious private high school. The DP Chinese Language and Culture course is designed to be a four level course in Mandarin Chinese.
• The purpose of first level is for students to speak, read, and write Chinese at a basic level. This course focus on the Chinese Pinyin Romanization system, Chinese simplified characters. This course also cover computer skills to with Chinese programs for using computers to study Chinese.
• The purpose of second level is basic understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese. There is an extensive utilization of cultural material and information. This course is designed for those who have taken Chinese 120 or who have the equivalent knowledge and skills. Students will further develop their ability to traditional Chinese characters.
• The third level is intermediate course, the continuation of CHIN 121, with a review of grammar. The student will develop fluency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing Chinese. The uses of new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions are introduced. Selected readings about Chinese culture and literature will be explored. This course is taught entirely in traditional Chinese characters, and students may use either Chinese written system to develop their knowledge and ability.
• The fourth level further develops the fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese. Students will extend their ability to communicate effectively and properly in various real-life situations, learn complex grammatical structures, and increase vocabulary using a significant number of characters. Further study of contemporary and traditional Chinese cultural elements will be carried out. This course is taught entirely in traditional Chinese characters, and students may use either Chinese written system to develop their knowledge and ability.
