My real background is in chemistry, with over 30 years in industrial research and development (R&D) roles before I transitioned into teaching. Mathematics is the language of science. I started my education as a math major before switching into Chemistry. But I've always had a love and fascination for numbers. It is this love that makes Chemistry and Physics such interesting sciences. Starting with Algebra, humans have devised a method of numeric communication that allows us to model the natural world. Wonderful! Algebra is a key component of this numeric characterization of the universe and finds use in everyday life. I can convey this enthusiasm of numbers in tutoring.
American history is short by world standards, if one ignores the history of the native Americans. But their history is equally interesting and filled with useful teachings. Their respect of the environment is perhaps the lesson worth relearning today. History since Columbus is rich with the ideas of people like John Adams and the Continental Congress that formed the foundation of liberty. Many arriving in the New World came because of the attraction of practicing their ideals, whether it be religious or business. There is a lot to learn from these debates and experiences.
The ASVAB covers a wide range of subject areas. This fits my background and interests well. I have good foundations in math chemistry, physics, biology, electrical circuits and computer logic, and used to work on my own car (until working on a Honda became nearly impossible without special tools and a lift). The test also emphasizes comprehension and correct word usage. My skills are honed from over 30 years in industrial R&D and teaching science, where good communication is essential.

I earned this degree while employed at Procter and Gamble – a premier consumer marketing company that defines many of the good marketing practices that make a company successful.
The study of business comprises a variety of familiar subtopics: marketing, finance, economics, product development, business law, and management. Another key factor is entrepreneurship - the ability to conceive and implement novel new products, services, and business practices. Negotiating skills are also valuable and can be practiced with mock scenarios. “Business” involves synthesizing all of these elements into a general business strategy based first on marketing (is there a need), product development (can it be made), finance (will it make or lose money), law (environmental, trade, and business laws), and management (motivating and leading the staff). Negotiation is required at all levels and can often define success or failure. Business models are culturally dependent. One based on "free enterprise" operates on a different set of rules than one in another country or culture. International marketing skills are important in understanding these points.
My education is in Chemistry but my industrial experience involved application of basic chemistry to engineering problems. I was invited to join the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) as a result of the work I did in process optimization of membrane-based gas separation systems while at Grace Membrane Systems. A number of publications were produced that detail the process requirements of membrane separations as well as an engineering analysis of using fuel cells to produce speciality chemicals. I was asked to produce a chemical engineering lesson on membranes for the University of California and the work has also appeared in a book chapter.

Finance is the math, logic, and laws concerning the flow and accounting of money in a defined entity. While many of the financial tools involve objective numbers, the more difficult factors involve such things as risk (e.g., defaults), timing (e.g. product launch and sales forecasts), and interest rate fluctuations.
A personal lesson in finance occurred when I believed, incorrectly, that Enron's management properly reported their financial statements. Learn how to read between the lines in financial statements.
I have a long history with computers, starting with punch cards for the Indiana University central computer, followed soon after by hands-on work with a DEC PDP8 unit for my PhD thesis project. The PDP8 required toggling each 12-bit instruction in machine code (ones and zeros) using twelve switches on the front of a unit the size of a mini-fridge. The "hard drive" back then was a teletype that produced a ticker tape of each line of code. I learned to program with machine code and very much appreciate the advent of modern computing that makes all of this so much easier.
My long history with computers has built a solid, self-taught knowledge of setting up and using them effeciently. I can troubleshoot problems and provide guidance on popular Windows-based systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet Explorer, and a number of creative design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Soundbooth, and other digital photo and video editing tools. Excel has some great tools that aren't well-known. I am also good with Internet-based instructional and reference materials.

This field of mathematics introduces the student how to use a series of relationships (equations) to solve problems of practical importance. It is the first step to more serious calculations such as calculus. There are typically multiple unknowns in problems and if they can all be related to each other in separate relationships, it is possible to solve for each unknown using techniques of substitution. These techniques often require some imagination to efficiently solve for the unknowns. Linear algebra teaches these skills.

In summary, marketing involves a complex series of activities designed to 1) identify a customer need, 2) quantifying the performance needs of the product or service, 3) requesting the organization to develop a solution to the need, 4) prepare the advertising and distribution plans, and 5) put into place customer product support. Identifying and quantifying the customer need requires a familiarity with the customers and their restrictions augmented with statistically correct market surveys to predict the dollar value of customer acceptance for the selected performance and price targets.
My first desktop computer was at Procter and Gamble in 1978, with 256K memory and a 10 MB (yes megabite) hard drive, which itself was $5,000. But what really astounded me was a program called Lotus 1-2-3, an early spreadsheet that made me realize why personal computers were here to stay.
Excel is now the spreadheet of choice and it has acquired some powerful features over the years. Learn to quickly set up complex spreadsheets with special copy and paste functions and take advantage of Excel's internal functions and graphing tools, But did you know about the ability of Excel to grab data from a website and enter it into a spreadsheet format without having to type anything? Very powerful tool.

Powerpoint is a useful communication tool for the digital age. It is easy to enter words and sentences for a slideshow. The more powerful tools include functions contained in the Insert and Animations tabs. Insert pictures is relatively straightforward but spreadsheets and other active documents are trickier. The animation functionality can be very useful for certain applications, but it is easy to overuse these features. Learn them, but use only where the information is better explained by some moving graphic element. Adding links to video and website is an invitation to problems when presenting. These can be overcome by embedding feature, depending on the format.
Word is a common word processor with some powerful features above and beyond a that of a memory typewriter. Spell check, tracking and accepting revisions, shortcuts, insertion of spreadsheets and photos, tables, and wordart provide much greater functionality.
I have a PhD in Chemistry (University of Illinois) and over 30 years of industrial experience. I cannot impart the latest developments in organic synthesis, but can help with basic organic chemistry, including naming and common functional group analysis.
I find a lot of fear of organic when it comes to naming, and this can be overcome with a little patience and a crib sheet. Organic Chemistry is simply a definition for all the carbon compounds, but they still obey the basic rules of chemistry.
Physical science covers a lot of material but generally refers to those parts of science dealing with inanimate matter or energy (e.g., chemistry, physics and astronomy). But biological research also has a large physical science component in certain areas.
The focus on matter and energy forms a good foundation for understanding the physical world. Terms like work, energy, mass, heat, potential, kinetic, density, etc. are all physical properties that can be defined and understood. Heat means different things depending on whether it is used in a science definition or in a weather forecast. Speed, velocity, and time can also be interpreted differently. Science depends on a common set of definitions concerning the physical properties of an item.
The rules for algebra form an elegant language from which we can develop amazingly useful counting relationships for a broad range of applications. From leaving a tip to calculating the impact of multiple influences on a complex system. Algebra has become a necessary component of our daily lives.
As a scientist, I appreciate the beauty of numbers. Most discoveries in science are a result of using calculations in observation and hypotheses. Precalculus and calculus are fields of mathematics that provide the groundwork for many scientific theories. I understand the operations of numbers, but I'll always remain impressed and appreciative of those mathematicians who had the insights to give man these tools. Newton may have been more impressive as a mathematician than as a physicist.

I’ve used Quicken (and TurboTax) for personal finances for over 10 years, and am comfortable in the use of the program. QuickBooks operates on the same principles but has added features that provide for automatic payroll and other needs of a typical business. I can help explain the key features, shortcuts, and "gotchas" in this software. I also have some useful strategies for setting up accounts that help track reimbursable business expenses.
Study skills involve time management and commitment. I have many years of educational experience, both college and graduate school, that have built my technique for productive study. My approach considers the work to be a useful challenge, with desired rewards. Breaks in the effort are critical, however. Avoid studying when tired. Take a break and get some sleep, or the time is wasted and disappointment sets in. I can help make study interesting and completion an accomplishment that provide incentive.

My credentials for video production all come via a self-taught experience covering nearly 10 years. I purchased one of the very first digital video cameras (Sony) and used a MOTODV card for importing the video into the computer. That led to Pinnacle Systems' video editing software and then to Adobe Premiere Pro. I also own and use Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Soundbouth, and Encore. I learned via Total Training DVD discs and through subscription to Video Editor and COW magazines (including their online tutorials). A hobby, but one I've spent a lot of money and time on, including the latest upgrade to Adobe Production Premium CS6.
