As a favorite teacher of mine liked to explain, even the most proficient young writers are haunted semi-consciously by a "professor-specter" which they feel obliged to placate and in placating which they ironically stifle the deeper sources of their own acuteness. Tutoring and teaching various levels of "Comp" for three years at a junior college in Pennsylvania, I honed my ability to set forth all the grammatical and expository technical knowledge students need to make their writing correct; as a Brandeis English Ph.D.-candidate and instructor of three University Writing Seminars as well as an assistant to various literature and film professors, I excelled during student conferences, at intensive one-on-one elicitations of the students' own ideas, finding the emotional-intellectual core of what they were trying to say and guiding them towards it. And, in the latter phase of my career-to-date, the truth of my teacher's maxim about professor-specters (or a corollary of it) often seemed borne out: surer of the sources of their own motivation--good thing to be in its own right!--my students' writing was also "automatically" more correct. I chose to emphasize the inspirational and empathic among my teacherly-tutorly strengths in this profile "free-response," not, as I hope you can tell, because anyone values "the rules" more than I do, but because I feel that what's unique about me is my nose for the ongoing interdependency of higher-order (executive-emotional) and basic (formal, rule-driven) skills. I hope you'll give me the chance to inspire your, or your child's, English!
