My name is Brook E. and I am 24 years old. I graduated from Lafayette College with a B.Sc. degree in Neuroscience in 2011. I am a science and math junkie with a unique talent of helping students access sophisticated math and science concepts in a fun and creative way. I have 5 years of experience tutoring clients ranging from middle schoolers to college students.
In college, I studied neuroscience, which focused on the life sciences but also included courses in physics, chemistry, and calculus. Besides doing independent research on breast cancer, I tutored fellow students in introductory biology, introductory physics, and calculus classes.
For the past 2 years, I have been privileged to serve as a tutor/mentor to Boston’s inner city youth who dream of pursuing college education. In my role as a tutor, I am responsible for planning and delivering lessons focused on strengthening the numeracy and literacy skills of my students in 9th-12th grades in small group settings on topics ranging from algebra to pre-calculus.
I am challenged to be creative, nurturing and most of all, patient in designing and delivering my lessons because a majority of my students are considerably lower than their grade levels in literacy and numeracy skills – especially those who are on Individualized Educational Program (IEPs) or Response to Intervention (RTI) Process. I also help coordinate the numeracy tutorial curriculum for algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, and pre-calculus by sharing my creative lesson plans with fellow tutors as well as by explaining high level mathematical concepts to them.
I am a very jovial person with a passion for creating an "aha moment" with my students. I utilize creative lesson plans that appeal to different senses to help them access concepts in their unique ways. I am exceptionally adept at utilizing technology to incorporate virtual simulations and games that will help the student understand topics in sciences and math.
I am fluent in Amharic and I love playing soccer.
