I graduated my high school ranked in the Top 10 of my class for GPA. I attended UCLA and graduated in 2010 with a degree in economics. Upon graduating, I joined the Peace Corps and became a high school English teacher in Cambodia. I completed my service in June 2012. Upon returning from the Peace Corps, I joined an Americorps program called City Year. There, I tutored for an average of 6-7 hours per day in an urban high school; Subjects included Geometry, Algebra, ELA, and, ESL. I worked directly in classrooms with teachers and tutored in the after-school homework help center every day.
I am currently tutoring clients in study skills, general homework help, writing, and math! I have taught an SAT prep class at a privately-funded school as well as tutored students 1:1 in SAT prep. I have worked with a wide range of diverse students, such as Cambodian students living in the countryside, urban high school students, immigrants from Cape Verde, and Asian-Americans at a private academy.
My philosophy for 1:1 tutoring consists of: 1) assessment and analysis - ask the student what they need help with; assess the student in suggested subjects with questions and impromptu quizzes. 2) targeted teaching - conduct brief lessons according to the student's needs (based on the assessment) and have the student apply these learned skills into new contexts. 3) adaptation - analyze how the student is responding to my instruction and guidance; ask the student to assess our collaborative work and how I can best assist them; adapt the instruction accordingly and holistically. 4) reflection - the student keeps a binder and journal of our lessons; the student reflects on what they learn during each session and their overall progress; the student analyzes their own confidence level and effort in their schoolwork; the student sets short-term, SMART goals. 5) reinforcement - the student re-explains topics that we've covered so that I can determine their level of mastery; briefly revisit previously-covered subjects for reinforcement; check in on SMART goals.
I expect only the best from myself and the students I work with, and understand the importance of adapting my teaching methodology according to the student's unique nature. I will eventually obtain my Masters and PHd. I love teaching and tutoring. I am one of the most passionate and caring teachers/tutors that you will ever meet and love empowering students and helping them reach their full potential.
