I have been a learner all of my life and find great joy in learning and teaching almost everything. I inspire this in my students as well, and under my tutelage they emerge confident.
I am particularly good at teaching GED math as well as writing, reading, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. Add in there life sciences and you have found a great tutor in anatomy and microbiology.
I graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in religion/philosophy and a minor in English. After undergraduate school I went to two carpentry schools and earned diplomas in residential construction. This honed my math skills, and in 1990 I was one of five staff who led and taught at the nationally known education model, "Youthbuild". I wrote and taught the curriculum for math, science and construction and a special curriculum called "Mental Toughness Training" which helps get young people who have not been successful at learning become focused learners. It is now used in all of the Youthbuild programs throughout the country. The math I taught was used to teach how to build homes and was put immediately to practical use. It is my philosophy that making a practical link to the learning is best when it can be done. My students who had entered the school with low academic self esteem did very well in my classes. Those who tested in at a 4th grade level left the program at a 10th grade level or better and went on to graduate from four year colleges, become CEOs of engineering companies, and nurses at MGH.
I will travel to your home or meet at a library near me or the student.
I can provide teaching references from places I have worked as well as from home schoolers I have taught.
