SCHEDULE/LOGISTICS: Unfortunately, I do not offer home tutoring. I tutor at libraries/coffee shops in Jamaica Plain, Brookline or downtown Boston. I have availability Thurs afternoon/evening, Friday afternoon, as well as some weekend availability. Sessions are 1.5 hours, though a first session could be one hour to determine fit.

ABOUT ME: I'm currently a graduate student at Emerson College working towards a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I tutored with Wyzant in my hometown in NJ for the past year and for a national test prep company for three years before that. My passions are language, art, and travel.

AS A TUTOR: I tutor all sections of the SAT and ACT as well as SAT II Writing. I help students with essay writing (including college application essays), from brainstorming to outlining to proofreading. In addition, I also tutor in languages including English as a Second Language, Spanish and Italian.

Before Wyzant, I tutored test prep and academic subjects with a national test prep company for the past three years.

My strength as a tutor lies in my patience, thorough questioning of a student's thought process and breakdown of more effective strategies, and a supportive attitude. My students leave with greater confidence and stronger study skills. Essay writing students learn to expand their idea base and improve the clarity of their writing. Language students develop a greater understanding of grammar and more confidence in their speaking skills. Students are assigned homework to reinforce what they've learned and I provide periodic progress reports.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE: I hold a Bachelor's Degree from Brown University with concentrations in American Studies and Literary Arts. In addition to my tutoring experience, I have three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language in the US as well as abroad (Chile/Italy).

My time working in education has taught me flexibility and the necessity of creating a strong foundation. I believe that students really learn when they truly understand the principles behind how to do something. Over my years in education, I have developed the resourcefulness to reach students at all levels.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

We will go over different types of questions and the grammar rules that they assess. Once students are more familiar with the types of questions they will be able to move more efficiently through the section.

ACT Math

ACT Math requires speed and efficiency. We will review the math concepts that are assessed on the test as well as complete practice questions with an emphasis on speed and accuracy.

ACT Reading

We will target the types of reading passages that are the strongest (and the weakest) for the student in order to develop the best strategy for him/her. We will also work on familiarizing the student with all the different types of passages and their questions.

ACT Science

ACT Science can be the hardest section for some students because of how intimidating the passages look. ACT Science actually tests your reading skills, rather than your science knowledge. We will go over how to do a quick overview of the passage as well as answer questions by scanning for key words.

English

I have taught English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language to adults locally and abroad, so I have experience in teaching grammar. I also took a variety of Creative Writing classes during my undergraduate years.

ESL/ESOL

I taught English as a Foreign Language in Chile at an adult professional institute for levels Basic through Intermediate in 2009. For the past three years, I worked as an English as a Second Language Instructor with The English School in Lawrenceville. I worked with students on areas such as grammar, conversation, writing, and life skill application.

Italian

I have studied Italian for the past three years. In addition, I spent the past summer working in central Italy as a Summer Camp Director of an English camp for Italian youth. During my stay, I lived with Italian host families.

PSAT

I have tutored the SAT with a national test prep company for the past three years in all sections. I also help prepare students for the PSAT, which is similar in content (except for the essay). I scored above 2300 on my SATs.

SAT Math

I scored an 800 on the math section of my SATs. I possess curricula that identifies each type of SAT math question and a strategy to approach it. For students who struggle with math, my three years of experience with a nationally recognized SAT company has taught me how to work with students on building up their math foundation.

SAT Reading

I scored above 700 on the Critical Reading portion of the SATs. Our Critical Reading preparation will include vocabulary exercises and passage comprehension strategies.

SAT Writing

I scored an 800 on the Writing portion of the SATs. We will cover the essay in detail, including effective ways to come up with supporting evidence and overall organization.

For grammar, we will cover the most common types of grammar error questions as well as how to attack each type of question.

Spanish

I lived in Chile for one year with a Chilean host family while teaching English at a community college, and I began my Spanish studies there through immersion. I continue to formally study Spanish grammar and translate literary texts.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is best learned through repetition and use. Methods include student-created flashcards, cartoon flashcards (SAT), generating sentences and quizzes.

Writing

I hold a Bachelor's degree from Brown University in American Studies and Literary Arts. I have tutored students in high school English and I have prepared students for the SAT essay as well as their college essays. I spend extensive time with students brainstorming and working with them to flesh out their ideas. Depending on the student's needs, we also work on essay organization and editing.
