Hello, and thanks for your interest! I have a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. in Psychology from the State University of New York at New Paltz. I currently am a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at Suffolk University and I teach upper level psychology courses at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

I tutor a wide variety of academic subjects, including math (arithmetic through trigonometry), grammar, reading and writing (of any level), general science (K thru 12), psychology, and basic biology!

I also offer test prep for the SAT, ACT, and GRE General exams as well as the GRE Psychology Subject Test.

I find that a one-size-fits-all tutoring style does not meet every student's needs, so I tend to tailor my style toward the particular student's needs, interests, and abilities. If you have a particular goal in mind, I can work toward that, or if you just want general improvement, I can come up with my own set of goals and methods. You're the client, so your voice matters to me!

Last but not least, I offer bass guitar lessons, beginner to advanced! I can teach you a specific style or method if you're interested in something in particular... otherwise, I favor an integrated approach that teaches sightreading, technique, and styles such as blues, jazz, funk, R&B, and rock. I can also teach country, heavy metal, reggae, whatever you'd like, but a well-rounded bassist typically can play any and all styles.

Thank you again for taking the time... I hope I can work with you or your child soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I tutor middle school and high school algebra, including pre-algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2. Many students find math difficult, but students struggle for various reasons. My strategy is to identify the root cause of the student's difficulty and remedy it in creative ways.

Algebra 2

I tutor middle school and high school algebra, including pre-algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2. Many students find math difficult, but students struggle for various reasons. My strategy is to identify the root cause of the student's difficulty and remedy it in creative ways.

Elementary Math

Many young students have difficulty in math, but there are a number of reasons why this may be the case. Rather than simply helping students complete the problems on their homework, I prefer to help pupils grasp the concepts they are struggling with, so they have stronger math skills in the future. I also tend to tailor the instruction to each individual student in fun and interesting ways rather than use a cookie-cutter approach for all students.

GRE

I am happy to tutor both the Subject Area Psychology GRE and the General GRE. I specialize in the analytical writing and the verbal reasoning portions of the exam (and have scored in the 99th percentile on the latter), but also tutor the quantitative section as well.

Guitar

I have played electric bass guitar for more than fifteen years, in styles including blues, rock, R&B, reggae, jazz, worldbeat, metal, and folk. I teach all levels of bass guitar, from absolute beginner to advanced players who want to sharpen their music theory skills. While I can help you meet a particular style or goal (e.g., "I want to learn enough to play a 12-bar blues in the studio"), a well-rounded bassist should be able to play all styles, have at least a basic understanding of music theory, and be able to read musical notation. To this end, I teach these skills in a structured program to those who simply want to be better players. I also teach techniques such as walking bass, slapping/popping, and more.

Prealgebra

Many young students have difficulty in math, but there are a number of reasons why this may be the case. Rather than simply helping students complete the problems on their homework, I prefer to help pupils grasp the concepts they are struggling with, so they have stronger math skills in the future. I also tend to tailor the instruction to each individual student in fun and interesting ways rather than use a cookie-cutter approach for all students.

Statistics

I am a clinical psychology Ph.D. student who has used statistics for coursework, thesis projects, and peer-reviewed published studies. I'm somebody who had a mixed early experience with statistics in school but have since grown to love it and understand it because of some great instructors I've had, and I would like to pass on these methods to more students, many of whom are needlessly scared by statistics because it's often taught in a very dry, intimidating way.

Writing

I specialize in tutoring writing on any level (elementary through professional). I am happy to work with ESL students as well as native English speakers who just want to polish their writing skills or would like help organizing a paper or essay.

While I am happy to simply proofread for spelling, grammar, and format for a single assignment, the most effective approach is to help the student acquire the skills to write more effectively in the future. This may require working on fundamentals to improve writing ability in general, which I am happy to do. I tailor my approach to the needs and desires of the particular student, so please feel free to let me know what you'd like to focus on.
