For the past five years I have been working on the south side of Chicago teaching students the skills and strategies needed to become proficient readers.
I began my career teaching kindergarten through eighth grade students strategies to develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and decoding. I continued in this position for four years before transitioning into a whole class setting teaching reading and social studies to middle school students. In order to adapt to the various reading levels and abilities, I established a guided reading system centered on flexible grouping, cooperative learning and an overall love of reading. While at Epiphany I also filled the role of Standardized Test Coordinator. My experience working with standardized tests extended my knowledge of how to prepare students for these exams.
After my third year of teaching, I began working to expand my knowledge of reading education by attending graduate school. The program at Dominican University emphasized reading development, legislation, assessment, and research-based teaching practices. I also wanted to focus part of my master's degree on educating English Language Learners (ELL). I opted out of one class to take Foundations of Language Minority Education and also took a course on educating ELL/Bilingual students in the general education classroom. My master's program culminated this past summer in a "reading academy" where students in and around Chicago came for additional help in reading. It was my job to coach a set of reading teachers, in addition to instructing the attending students.
My tutoring sessions vary depending on the needs of the student. An assessment is given in the first session to determine the reading level, strengths and target areas. Each session begins with a mini-lesson based on the target area(s) and transitions into an authentic reading activity where the strategy is put into practice. Progress is monitored through portfolio evaluations, tracking the improvements made by the student. I believe my teaching experience and background in reading education have prepared me to educate the students I encounter through WyzAnt. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
