Hello everyone, and thank you for viewing my profile!
I specialize in providing assistance to students who are having problems with formal university-level English composition, particularly in the areas of English grammar, vocabulary, and rhetoric. I also provide assistance in: English comprehension, conversational English, and preparation for the TOEFL/IELTS examination. In addition, I am very adept in teaching Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese to non-native Chinese speakers. I have been tutoring university-level ESL speakers for the past 5 years, particularly students from Southeast Asian backgrounds. This is because I have spent a great deal of time working and studying in Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong and China, as well as in the Asian Boston community volunteering at various greater Boston Chinese cultural associations.
I have been studying Cantonese and Mandarin for a number of years and am able to speak, read, and write both languages fluently. I studied Cantonese at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and I studied Mandarin Chinese at Shanghai University. I won a full scholarship from the United States federal government to study at both universities.
As a non-native Chinese speaker, I am much better suited to assist students learning Chinese than a native speaker could. This is because I know the answers to questions students will ask, and am aware of the difficulties students of Chinese will face firsthand. Furthermore, speaking Chinese also gives me a unique advantage teaching English over typical English instructors. This is because I’m aware of and can explain the complexities of both languages not only in great detail, but in whichever language the student is most comfortable with.
I have been featured in numerous Hong Kong magazines, newspapers, and television programs due to my uncommon fluency in Cantonese. I am currently in the process of obtaining my BA in Foreign Languages and English from a well known Boston University. I am able to accommodate and have experience teaching in both one-on-one intensive sessions, and to full classrooms of students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I guarantee that you won't regret it!
