Biostatistics
I have taken many classes in biostatistics - basics through survival analysis, logistic and other regression analysis, and some factor analysis. I have about five years of experience working with public health and medical students, as well as practicing doctors, one-on-one to teach biostatistics as it relates to their exams, classes, and projects. I am a director of a data/statistics unit at work and mentor my staff daily in biostatistics. I have tutored 3 students in biostatistics so far through WyzAnt, and all students have rated me highly.
English
I have an extensive vocabulary, and a strong background in reading and writing all types of documents. I can help you improve your understanding of written and conversational English. If you are fluent in English, I can help you improve the impact and clarity of your language. If you are less-than-fluent in English, and especially if you are trying to write a manuscript in English, I can definitely help you. I have helped my Chinese colleagues, for example, write their scientific papers in English.
Grammar
Before I became a scientist, I served as an administrative assistant to many different types of professionals, including probation officers, engineers and physicians. Several came to me requesting guidance in improving their grammar. I taught them tricks I use to remember how to express possessives properly, whether to use an adverb or an adjective, and when it is appropriate to use a comma, as a few examples. I can give you tips to improve your grammar as well!
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Excel is an AMAZING program! It can make beautiful and informative charts and tables, but can also store data in very creative ways. For those of you who do calculations, Excel is "the" scientific calculator with all the bells and whistles. I am a superuser of Excel, and if you can tell me what you are trying to do, I can show you how to do it! I can give you examples from my past work, and even develop examples I can give you to help you with your work at hand.
Microsoft PowerPoint
As a scientist, I have extensive experience using MS Powerpoint to develop slide presentations and scientific posters. I can help the student add and format graphics, photos, text, audio, and animations to their slide presentations. I can also guide the student as to optimal slide design, optimal slide deck organization, and the optimal use of text on slides.
Microsoft Word
I am a superuser of Microsoft Word. I am comfortable teaching beginners the basics, such as page numbers, headers, footers, and tables. I'm equally comfortable teaching advanced functions, such as the use of styles, automatically generating a table of contents, and conducting a mail merge.
Proofreading
My previous years as an administrative support person gave me experience at proofreading many types of documents: contracts, reports, scientific publications, instruction manuals, and presentations. I would be happy to help you by proofreading your work!
Psychology
Although I am an epidemiologist, I have worked in an administrative capacity in the mental health field, and have collaborated on psycho-epidemiologic studies. Those in the field of psychology who are seeking guidance in study design, research administration, proposal-writing, statistical analysis and manuscript development will find my advice very helpful, as I am an author on many published peer-reviewed articles in the psychological as well as medical journals.
SAS
I have a strong background in SAS. I have proficiency in uploading data to SAS, manipulating data in SAS, and running procs such as regressions and frequencies. I can build macros, organize code, and show you how to apply formats. I can show a person how to look online for macros and other solutions when SAS gets confusing.
Statistics
My specialty is in biostatistics, but the foundation of statistics is the same in all fields. Arguably, the foundation of statistics is the most important to understand. I am very good at teaching these foundations, especially to those struggling with intro-level statistics. Those who are required to take statistics but lean more towards human services (psychologists, nurses, etc.) will enjoy my teaching style. I make these foundations "feel" real so that you can really understand them and apply them on tests and exams.
Vocabulary
Because I enjoy reading, I have an extensive vocabulary. I can show you tips on how to expand your vocabulary.
Writing
I am published as a scientific and creative writer several times over. I can help you with all types of writing, from poetry to prose, instruction manuals to federal grant applications. I'm especially helpful to people who are completing difficult applications that require writing (business loans, medical school, fellowships, etc.). I can help you organize your writing, help you keep track of and use references, and make recommendations as to clearer and concise wording. Students doing theses/dissertations have found my guidance especially useful.
Yoga
Although I am not a certified instructor, I have been studying yoga for over 10 years, and taught a free class weekly at my last workplace. I have knowledge in the philosophy behind yoga, Ayurvedic traditions, and Hinduism. I can teach many physical techniques for yoga, including meditation and yoga poses ("asanas"). I'm especially good at guiding students in modifying asanas so they may be able to do them at the beginning, or to accommodate a challenge or disability. I can even help you stand on your head if you want!
