I have 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience with a B.A. in History from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, specializing in American history. I enrolled in a PhD program in Political Science at same university. I've taught more than 25 courses, mostly Introductory American Government. I completed all requirements for the degree except the dissertation. I left to work as a freelance writer in American history for one year, and it turned out to be 5 years. I contributed to more than half a dozen publications, mostly almanacs. I could have taken M.A. degree but intended to return to complete PhD. The University had a rule at the time not allowing student to receive 3 degrees. Also, I completed several graduate courses at Harvard Extension School, including the proseminar in Social Studies.
I worked as the Library Assistant for 5 semesters in Library Media Center at Hingham (MA) High School. During this period, I helped hundreds of students - probably more than a thousand - with the the research and writing of papers and other school assignments. I also worked as a substitute teacher in English and Social Studies. I taught AP US History for a month. I was granted certification in Social Studies and History (9th-12th) by MA Department of Education in May 1996 based on my teaching experience at the University of Massachusetts. This certification is still valid.
From 2002 to 2007, I worked as a private tutor with two students from Nigeria attending UMass-Boston. This included their two required freshmen English classes. One was majoring in political science and graduated in 2004.
I worked as substitute teacher and library assistant for the Somerville Public Schools from 2002-2010.
I have passed History and Communication and Literacy tests (8-12). I scored a perfect 5 on all three open response essays, but I still need to pass the reading subtest. I will be taking the Political Science/Political Philosophy and English (8-12) certification tests in 2012. Passing the English test will establish my certification for Humanities (5-8).
I can tutor students at any grade level from 6th-12th and undergraduate and graduate school students at any level. My knowledge in both the areas of History and Political Science is at a PhD level.
Helping students with the research and writing of papers and other class assignments is my strongest ability. I scored 100% on both of the WyzAnt Writing and English Certification tests.
While I am a very good teacher and I am an exceptional tutor.
