I would love to be your tutor.I recently graduated from Lesley University with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. While at Lesley, I was a part of the graduate internship program at BB&N. Currently, I am a Second Grade associate teacher at the Derby Academy, as well as a private tutor for students of varying ages and academic abilities. At Derby, I have worked with students on “demystifying” reading through an explicit Orton-Gillingham based curriculum. This curriculum allows children to look at words in an analytical way, discover phonetic patterns, and build stronger fluency. The Orton-Gillingham based curriculum allows children to place a stronger sense of meaning behind the words that they are reading.
I have worked with all different levels of students in all areas of elementary education including reading fluency and mathematical skills. I have also helped students sort ideas into graphic organizers and present their ideas to the class. while working with older students, I have worked on organizing complex ideas, studying for the PSAT and SAT, and developing meaningful essays.
My tutoring has taught me that students learn at varying speeds and that different teaching strategies are needed for different students. As a result, I try to find many ways to teach a specific concept. Examples would be baking cookies to learn how to add fractions, and building clay models to teach cellular function. Tutoring has also taught me that to be an effective teacher, you need to be flexible and be able to approach an idea or concept from many different angles.
I would love the opportunity to work with you and your child.
