Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am a retired university professor (Florida State University) who has been teaching English, GED, and math in Boston for the past fifteen years. Although my Ph.D. was not in math, I am rather good at teaching math because, in college, I suffered for a time from "math anxiety." For that reason, unlike some math teachers, I do not simply assume that because some part of math is easy for me, it must be easy for everybody. In short, I take the time and have the patience to work with students who are a little anxious about math.

English

I have a Ph.D. from Cornell University and was Professor of History at Florida State University for 30 years. I was editor of the Florida State University Press and three times Visiting Editor at the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Virginia. I have published one book and several articles, and edited the Bancroft Prize winner from Columbia University in 1998. I have extensive experience sine my retirement in tutoring students for English and writing, and have taught English classes at a number of locations, including Roxbury Community College, the International Learning Center at the Boston Central YMCA, and the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL/ESOL for more than fifteen years. I taught at the International Learning Center at the Boston YMCA, at Roxbury Community College, at Catholic Charities, and, presently, at the Jewish Vocational Center in downtown Boston.

GED

I am a retired university professor (History, Florida State University) and I have been teaching GED classes and students for the past fifteen years. I have had good success in teaching for this test because I am thoroughly familiar with it and because I work well with students. The section on math is a strong point for me because I had "math anxiety" myself when I was in college, and I know what it is like.

GMAT

I am a retired university professor (Florida State) with fifteen years experience in tutoring for various exams since I moved to Boston (ACT, GRE, SAT, TOEFL, HiSET, GED, TEAS, etc.) I was twice honored as one of the three best undergraduate teachers at Florida State, and I have published one book and edited several others. I also served as editor of the Florida State University Press and as Visiting Editor at the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Grammar

I am a retired university professor and have been teaching English, math, and test preparation (SAT, TOEFL, GED, GRE, etc.) in Boston for several years. I have a Ph.D. from Cornell University in history, and taught at Florida State University for thirty years.

Public Speaking

In college, I had a second minor in speech and worked with W. Norwood Brigance, one of the most renowned teachers and authors in the field. For thirty years I lectured to classes ranging from fifty to two-hundred and fifty students in a university setting. I have given presentations to the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Lion's Club, the Florida Senate Education Committee, and various civic clubs in Tallahassee, Florida and Williamsburg, Virginia.

SAT Reading

I am a retired university professor with substantial experience in writing and editing. I was editor of the Florida State University Press and Visiting Editor of Publications at the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Virginia. I have published two books and edited several others, including one winner of the Bancroft Prize in American History from Columbia University.

SSAT

I am a retired university professor (Florida State) and was twice honored as one of the three best undergraduate teachers at the university. For the past fifteen years, I have been working with high school students and helping them prepare for such tests as the GED, HiSET, ACT, SAT, GRE, TOEFL, etc. I get along well with students and they make good progress, largely because I genuinely care about the students and am able to work with them at a level that challenges them but does not intimidate them. The most important attribute of a good teacher is that he/she cares about students.

TEAS

First of all, I have a Ph.D. from Cornell University with a major field in American history and minor fields in American Literature and American Government. Although it has been several years since I took the exam, I scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT. I have tutored in English, Math, and Social Sciences for adult learners for the past fifteen years. On several occasions I worked with students hoping to apply to nursing programs, and while teaching English at the Boston YMCA I taught a class of twelve foriegn students who were intent upon entering a program for nursing. Two-thirds of the students were successful. I have been approved by WyzAnt in TOEFL, Vocabulary, Writinbg, SAT Reading, SAT Writing, Reading, Grammar, Pre-Algebra, ESOL, GED, etc.

I believe I can handle these assignments without any problem. I also have a small library of materials for the TEAS test, including "5 TEAS Practice Tests" from McGraw Hill.

TOEFL

I am a retired university professor (History, Florida State University) with more than ten years experience in teaching for the TOEFL exam. I have taught at Roxbury Community College, UMass/Boston, the International Learning Center at the Boston YMCA and am presently employed, part-time, by United South End Settlements teaching GED and pre-GED classes. I have taught students from around the world, and have had a great deal of success in working with them. I taught for both the old and the new TOEFL exams and am quite familiar with the tests.

Writing

I am a retired university professor (Florida State) and I have been teaching writing and math classes in Boston for the fifteen years since my retirement. I was editor of the Florida State University Press as well as Visiting Editor at the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Virginia. I have been quite successful in helping students improve their writing skills. I have also published two books myself and edited several others. I was twice selected as one of the three best undergraduate teachers at Florida State.
