I am Alice and I love to teach! I have taught students of all ages, providing help with homework and school subjects. I have also taught the flute for many years.
My unique background as a credentialed educator and a professional flutist provides me with the tools to be a successful teacher.
I have both a Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School and a Master’s of Science in Education from Sarah Lawrence College. I am MA certified in K-6. My performance background, coupled with my Education degree give me the ability to understand how students learn and to help my students in a way that works for them as individuals. I have worked with all ages and levels from elementary school to college with different learning styles and requirements.
What I offer as a K-6 Tutor
I am not just a classroom teacher -- I am an educator with a broad range of teaching experiences. My work for CollegePilot, the Math Forum, and Kaplan was creating math problems to reinforce targeted mathematical concepts to stimulate learning and retention. As the science teacher for an alternative sixth grade program, I was responsible for creating and teaching the science curriculum. While working for a local environmental organization, I created and delivered original nature and science programs for elementary aged children.
My training at Sarah Lawrence was child-centered and emphasized the philosophy that “teaching is indeed an art; it is always being made and remade, and it is never finished”. I have brought that philosophy to my educational work in schools and in music, nurturing the potential in each student. In addition, I am the mother of two boys in their twenties, so I have a broad understanding of young people throughout their development.
What I offer as a Flute Teacher and Coach
I am also a flutist with an extensive performance background including 9 years as an orchestral flutist in the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, freelance work in the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, chamber playing and solo appearances. I bring this rich experience to my students through my teaching. For more than twenty-five years, I have achieved excellent results with my students, who become better flutists and, even more importantly, acquire a lifelong love of music.
My flute lessons offer a positive, nurturing environment tailored to the individual student of all levels, letting them enjoy playing the flute and excel, too. Each student has opportunities to explore different styles of music and to earn through the music they like.
I will help with school band and orchestra music (move up in seat assignments) and preparation for contests and festivals.
Performance opportunities for students include: out-reach programs in nursing homes, hospitals, cafes;student recital opportunities to show-case achievements in a supportive atmosphere, and flute ensemble performances and classes.
I want my flute students to learn as well as to enjoy their musical experience. By doing that, they not only achieve the self-confidence and satisfaction that comes from mastering a musical instrument, but are able to use their music to make a contribution to the world around them.
I have NY State certification in grades K-6, 0-2, and Music K-12. I have passed all the MA certification tests for certification in K-6 and am just awaiting the papers to come through. I worked for Edison Schools Inc. as a math content developer, creating test prep. for elementary math. I have tutored kids of all ages, and am presently substitute teaching at the Shore Country Day School in Beverly, MA.
I am a Juilliard School of Music graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Flute from that school. For 9 years, I was a member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. I have taught the flute at the University of London, Ontario, Canada, as well as privately in the San Francisco area, NY, and CT. I have been teaching the flute for over 30 years.
I graduated with a Bachelor's of Music from the Juilliard School of Music and have been a professional musician for 30 years. I played the flute in professional orchestras and also have played the piano for many years. I have a sound understanding of general music topics.
I recently passed all the tests required for K-6 MA certification in elementary education. One of those required tests was Foundations of Reading, which consists of three parts: Foundations of Reading Development, Development of Reading Comprehension, Reading Assessment and Instruction. There is a strong emphasis on knowing phonics in these sections and in the test overall. This skill was also emphasized in my classes at Sarah Lawrence College where I received my Master's of Science in Education.
I feel that I am qualified to tutor the Praxis exams because, in the past year, since coming to MA from NY, I have passed all five exams for my MA teaching certificate. I took each exam only once and was self-taught for these exams. I developed a plan of study based on my research about each exam. I can definitely help others to pass this exam based on my personal experience.
I feel that I a qualified to tutor students in public speaking because I have a performing arts background (I am a Juilliard graduate) and have been performing musically and verbally since I was a child. In addition, I recently took three levels of comedy improv classes and got very comfortable performing in improv in front of audiences.
I have worked on an SAT prep online site and also did tutoring, so I am very familiar with the type of reading and writing the SAT calls for.
My grammar and writing skills are very strong and I understand that students all have different styles of learning. My approach is to work to bring out the student's strengths and improve weak areas.
I have worked on test prep for an online SAT prep site and am familiar with the grammar, vocabulary and reading styles on the test. I understand that everyone has his/her own learning style and I try to tailor my tutoring around the particular style of the student.
I am certified to teach K-6, 0-2, and music K-12 in NY, and have passed all the required tests for MA K-6 certification (just awaiting paperwork to come through). Throughout the programs for these certificates, I have studied how to guide students in their study skills. In addition, I am very well organized, write excellent papers, and have always gotten top grades in my classes. I understand the skills required to study properly and produce good work and am experienced at passing those skills on to my students.
