Welcome to my WyzAnt profile! My name is Florence and thank you for your interest. Well, here is a little bit about me so you can decide whether I am the ideal tutor for you! My favorite subjects to teach are elementary math, science and social studies. If there is another subject you would like to know about, just ask and we can discuss that.
I am Irish and I moved to the USA in 2008 to be with my now husband. I am an Irish traditional music teacher and I have taught Irish music on the concertina to students of all ages, from young children to adults. I enjoyed this very much and I love to see the children fully self-expressed with their music. I continue to teach regularly since my move from Ireland to the USA. I travel occasionally to workshops throughout the United States to teach and perform. I realized how much I love teaching through being a musician.
I completed a 4 year business and human resource management degree in Ireland and graduated with honors from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, Galway in 2005. I continued pursuing my music teaching and out of this grew my interest in moving into the classroom as an elementary school teacher.
Upon moving from Ireland in June of 2008, I decide to pursue an elementary teaching licensure K-8 post-bac program with Scottsdale Community College in Arizona. I graduated from the STEP program in May 2009 and received my Arizona elementary teaching licensure K-8. From this I pursued substitute teaching with 2 different school districts in the area, Alhambra and Scottsdale. I gained invaluable experience as the school districts I worked with were very diverse and of different socio-economic backgrounds. I have extensive experience at all grade levels up to 8th grade and I also spent some time working with students with special needs.
I am now relocated to Boston and eager to get back teaching and into the classroom. I have just started working for WyzAnt and I see it as a wonderful opportunity for me to share with students my love of teaching and learning, showing them how their worst subject can become their best with a little guidance and patience.
I favor a "hands-on" approach where the teaching involves interaction between the tutor and the student. I believe concrete examples help the student comprehend and learn the concept rather than just memorizing how its done or memorizing facts and figures. Worksheets are in addition to this approach and of course teaching methods are suited to the learning style of the student.
Thank you and I look forward to helping you out in whatever way I can!
