Learn how to fill out an application, talk to your landlord, ask directions. These are some every day tasks that most of us take for granted. Learning basic English skills can be a stepping stone to a better job or an education. Broaden your horizons and have a more fulfilling social life!

Tutoring with sensitivity, dignity and patience that is so important when tutoring adult learners. Reading and writing can be fun! I teach my students to not only read and write correctly but to enjoy these skills as well. Reading and writing well can open a whole new world to those who may currently be struggling with these subjects. My goal will be to instill an enjoyment and an appreciation of the interpretation and expression of the written word.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Legal Education from the University of Massachusetts. At college I taught and privately tutored adult ESL students in legal terminology and case law. Upon graduation I received the 1988 Book Award for my writing through the Law Department. I worked for twenty five years in human services, specifically with low income individuals and families as a case manager and accessed all types of benefits and services for clients. I also served that same community as an outreach worker, providing referrals for families and individuals in crisis. Additionally, I conducted ongoing education in a monthly seminar format to adults seeking an understanding of landlord and tenants rights and responsibilities for use in the first time home purchasing process.

I offer some flexibility regarding fees. Please inquire at the time of your request for services.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

Learn English as a second language! From the first session students will use English exclusively. Emphasis will be placed upon conversational and practical wording. A good choice for those students with limited understanding of their new language.

Reading

Learn to enjoy reading! Sessions will concentrate on practical interpretation of words as well as learning an appreciation of the written word. Assignments will cater to the student's areas of interest in teaching the ability to navigate the world of books.

Spelling

Learn the rules of spelling. Learn how to spot incorrect spellings and make the appropriate changes.

Vocabulary

Expanding vocabulary is crucial in improving writing skills. Learning to express yourself well is a liberating experience and opens many doors previously not available to you. Mean what you say and say what you mean!

Writing

Writing well facilitates making life connections previously unavailable to you in your life. Starting with the keeping of a daily diary we will expand to writing both fiction and non-fiction short pieces. Learning to edit your own work will allow practical experience that will serve you well beyond your tutoring sessions. Don't be afraid to write. Enjoy yourself.

My name is Hilary. I have always enjoyed working with older teens and adults. I was a case manager in human services for many years and found that that the motivations for learning in adults can be quite different than the motivations for children. Adults are very often put in a position where they stand to lose an opportunity, such as a job or an education due to their limited native language... read more
