I have really enjoyed working with elementary through high school students as they develop an awareness of the world around them. It is an age where teaching is critical to having a positive impact on students’ attitudes as learners and members of a community, developing a sense of self, of commitment to their fellow human beings, and awareness of their environment. I know that how students feel about themselves influences how productive they are, their ability to learn with confidence, and their growth in an increasingly complex world. I bring many years of experience to enrich my ability as a teacher and mentor to young people in a variety of ways. I am a long-time resident of western Massachusetts, have ties to the community through the Springfield and Greenfield Farmers Market, and am the mother of a young teenage son. I am also a member of the business community, an artist and musician, a worldwide traveler, an environmentalist, and I am dedicated to racial, religious, and social equality. I am a believer in using a multi-faceted approach in teaching to a variety of learning styles and that my adult perspectives as a citizen of the world will have a positive impact on my ability to engage students in the learning process.
I encourage students to be problem solvers by teaching them to be analytical and critical thinkers in a climate of mutual respect and open mindedness. As a graduate student at Antioch University of New England, I designed curriculum that was innovative, practical, and connected to real world situations. As a teacher, I believe integrated and deep exploration of subject matter where possible is the way for kids to get knowledge “in their bones.” Active and engaged learning results in sustained knowledge and understanding that will help students grow up to become thoughtful, concerned adults. In an age where we must test children at every turn, where teachers are so accountable to curriculum standards and tangible proof that their methods are effective, it is more of a challenge than ever to keep students engaged. My love of teaching, creativity, and compassion for students make me an enthusiastic and energetic teacher. I will always strive to encourage students to achieve academic excellence, to work collaboratively, and be engaged, participating adults. I am also adaptable and try to find innovative ideas in helping students understand assimilate challenging material.
