Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

As a scientist myself, I have excellent skills in science. This all started when I was a curious child, and it continued through my science-based curricula in college and graduate school. I have an excellent understanding of nearly all scientific principles, the scientific method, and current topics. I have an analytical mind and one of my favorite magazines is Scientific American. My interests range through medicine/health, biology, ecology, astronomy, biogeography, and earth sciences.

Anatomy

I have excellent aptitude with anatomy because of my biological background. I covered a lot of anatomy material in my human physiology teaching.

Astronomy

I am not an astronomer, but I took astronomy in college and I have stayed up-to-date with many aspects of astronomy, from planetary and stellar, to cosmology. Because of my broad experience, I can definitely help you learn this science as well as many others.

Biology

I started in the natural sciences when I majored in zoology and minored in botany, in college. These required extensive biological course work that started with chemistry and cell biology. I have put these skills to work in my teaching. I taught college-level biology laboratories where I presented information on many topics including microbiology, pond life, sampling and experimental techniques, and ecology.

Botany

In college, I obtained a minor in botany. My courses included general botany, plant physiology, plant ecology, local flora, and paleoflora.

As an ecologist, I have conducted botanical field work such as measuring vegetation, censusing plant species, and studying the plant composition of different habitats.

I have seen first-hand many of the world's plant species and I have reviewed databases of plants. I am very good at identifying plants and researching online databases.

Ecology

My career is as a wildlife ecologist--I have a Master of Science in wildlife ecology. My coursework in this field is as extensive as anyone you are likely to meet and I have extensive field experience. For example, I have studied waterfowl in the Great Plains of the U.S. and Canada, I have mist-netted birds in the tropics, and I have captured bobcats and ocelots in the southern U.S. This just scratches the surface!

English

I had several wonderful English courses in college, and before that, in high school. I have been an avid reader and writer since I was a kid. Today, I continue to read novels, scientific journals, and popular literature and I am always writing in my professional field. In my college-level teaching, I worked with students on their papers, making sure that their final products were constructed properly and accurately conveyed their intentions.

General Computer

I have worked as a computer owner, manager, and systems administrator more than 15 years. I am very skilled with file systems, browsers, software, and hardware. I am competent will all kinds of software including system backup, antivirus, desktop office, graphics, and many other kinds. In addition to Windows, I have worked with Unix and Linux. I do not consider myself advanced with Mac software but I can solve just about any problem with Windows.

Feel free to contact me with inquiries about your specific needs.

Geography

Geography is a huge field, but I have an excellent grasp of it, having traveled widely around the world and around the United States. I am especially knowledgeable about North America (I have travelled to 49 states plus Puerto Rico) and Mesoamerica, but I have also traveled to Europe, Afghanistan, Japan, and Hawaii.

I am an expert in geographical analysis using geographical information systems (GIS). In my work, I have created hundreds of maps and examined land cover and the distribution of human impacts.

Geology

I have always loved landforms, rocks, and minerals. I am especially good at interpreting the land surface and sedimentary environments, including paleontology. I took these courses in college and loved them. To me earth science is the foundation for all that happens on earth—this includes plate tectonics, climate change, and oceanography.

Guitar

I started playing acoustic guitar 29 years ago! For years and years, I used to play folk music gigs at restaurants. I also love to sing. I have learned both flat picking and finger picking styles, including southern style. I currently own six and twelve-string guitars.

If you want to know electric guitar, I can't help you, but if you want to learn introductory acoustic chords and songs, I'm your guy!

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Excel for about 15 years. I use it to enter data, conduct analysis, filter datasets, make graphics, and to make presentations. My skills include functions, sorting and filtering, pivot tables, generating charts, etc.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been using Microsoft Outlook for many years and have dealt extensively with its components. I have regularly setup new mail accounts and customized them as-needed.

I manage a large set of contacts, a complex hierarchy of folders, and calendars. I also effectively manage junk mail.

I perform Outlook archives, exports, and imports, as well as data backups containing my critical Outlook files.

I also understand email lists, file attachments, signatures, and other functions.

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a student and a researcher, I routinely use Powerpoint to make presentations. With a little patience, It's easy. But there are many pitfalls to avoid, and many things to consider in your presentations.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using Microsoft Windows since Version 3.1 became popular around 20 years ago. As a computer-based specialist, I have used Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 Professional, XP, Vista, and now Windows 7. I am expert with user accounts, printers, drivers, software installation, updates, adding hard drives, disk defragmentation, data backup, email, and all kinds of other things.

Most Windows operations and troubleshooting issues are easy to solve. As a system administrator, I have dealt with most of them over the years!

Photography

I started photography by working in my father's darkroom and I have been taking photographs for more than 45 years. I understand the principles of exposure, saturation, depth of field, macro-photography, ISO, telephoto, time-exposures, etc. With an artistic eye, I also understand the elements of composition and motion. I am also skilled at digital procedures such as re-sampling, color and tone adjustment, compression, and much more.

Years ago, I worked as a newspaper photographer. I also have had my photographs published in a book and I had an exhibit of my work at a city library.

Physical Science

All my life I have taken an active role in learning the sciences. I grew up in an academic family and, following in my father's footsteps, I have an inquisitive mind that always seeks answers to our most pressing problems. So I subscribe to scientific journals including Scientific American, and several ecological journals.

Physiology

I have a broad understanding of mammalian and human physiology, having taken physiology in college and taught physiology while I was a graduate student. I am well versed in laboratory experimentation related to the major organ systems, blood analysis, tissue types, and physiological processes.

Proofreading

Proofreading and editing are among my top skills. I am always looking for better ways to re-phrase a sentence so that its meaning is conveyed simply and eloquently. I am a stickler for proper sentence structure and I love helping people realize their writing potential. As a teacher, I have had many opportunities to work with students on their writing assignments.

SAT Writing

SAT Writing requires an excellent comprehension of sentence structure and logical presentation of both ideas and sentences in the proper sequence. I can help you by providing critical feedback and excellent recommendations for improving sentence, paragraph, and outline structure so that your essays are well-constructed and easy to read. In my college and graduate school coursework, I learned a great deal from both my mentors and my critics. One of my little achievements was my first place winning of my college's annual writing competition.

Spanish

I decided to learn Spanish as an adult when I was in college, and I learned it by taking coursework, studying on my own, attending Spanish conversation groups, and by traveling in Latin America. I spent 9 months in Costa Rica during 2003 and 2005 and I have spent a lot of time in Guatemala where I work with indigenous villagers. When I am there, I speak Spanish exclusively, since none of them speak and English. I have also spent a lot of time traveling through Mexico.

Writing

Writing came naturally to me when I was a child and I have been writing ever since. In high school I took creative writing. This was followed in college with writing for the life sciences, technical writing, and scientific abstract writing. I love science writing because it demands I write to a very high standard--so there is little room for doubt about what I mean to say. I am also excellent at proofreading, or more explicitly, editing. Editing is one of my best skills and it requires always determining if there is a better way to rephrase a passage, critical review of punctuation, and a broad consideration of the words, especially the synonyms, that are available to most-accurately and efficiently portray your subject.

There is more than one way to write correctly. In fact, if everybody wrote the same way, the world would be a much more boring place. But within this broad diversity, there runs a common understanding of what good writing looks like. I will help you find your unique style while holding you to a high standard!

Zoology

My bachelors degree is in zoology. It involved taking dozens of college and graduate courses. These include such diverse courses as comparative vertebrate zoology, natural history, ornithology, ichthyology, invertebrate zoology, and animal behavior.

I have been involved in additional field work involving the collection of insects, the collection of birds, and trapping and tracking mammals in the U.S., Mexico, and Costa Rica.

My doctoral research focused on the geographical distribution of bird habitat.

I have been an avid birdwatcher since I was a child and now have seen 864 species in the wild. I have a very strong background in the diversity of nature, conservation issues, and the biomes and habitats of the world.
