I have an master's degree in education (MAED/SpEd) with a concentration in special education and special needs advocacy. I currently teach multiple subjects (math, science, and literacy skills) in a special needs classroom. The main subjects that I provide tutoring and instruction for are in science, literacy skills (inclusive of reading, writing, and communications goals) and math oriented classroom. I have provided 1:1 instruction for students with behavioral, emotional, and developmental delays in the SpEd classrooms.
I am extremely familiar with constructing age and grade-level appropriate lesson and unit plans that are fun AND purposeful. I am capable of reading through goals and objectives of an IEP to determine which areas to tutor in and can provide testing for specific subject matter to determine grade level.
I genuinely enjoy working with students with special education needs, and this is one of the main reasons that I seek employment within this field. The time and patience necessary to help a child grow and learn are attributes that I pride myself on possessing. Making a difference in their daily lives and helping to provide educational opportunities are my main priorities. I am a compassionate, patient, and skilled professional that seeks a position where I can assist in such avenues of education, allowing me to help the students with special needs gain access to additional resources. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed a Masters degree in Education, and my most recent work was to teach students in an elementary school setting. We worked on subjects of math, reading, and spelling; some of the work included telling time, sight word identification, and reading comprehension.
I have worked in both public and private school systems with elementary grade students. The instruction that was provided included teaching individual students, small groups of four/five students, and whole class instruction.
Elementary math can seem so tough, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the concepts like telling time, counting money, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division become easier.
The students that I have worked with find Math FUN once they become confident in the processes that we work on in the various lesson plans.
I have worked with programs of Touch Math, Base 10 blocks, and various software programs to help the student become successful in the Math Curriculum.
I am very familiar with creating diverse lesson plans in elementary math and this is a subject I enjoy working with students.
I like making math FUN!
I am very familiar with understanding the world of elementary science and this is a subject I enjoy working with students.
I like making elementary science FUN!
Elementary science can seem so tough, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the concepts like knowing the different eras of time, space exploration topics, the geography "stuff" like maps and rocks and the earth, as well as oceans, weather, and simple life forms of elementary Science become easier.
I am an educational advocate for students who have hearing impairment, speech and communication disorders. Even though I am not a degreed professional (speech-language pathologist, audiologist, etc.) in this field, I do have access to numerous professional resources for the deaf/hard of hearing (hearing impaired) community.
I am a parent of a child who is moderate to profoundly deaf since birth. My son is 14 years old, had attended a school for deaf/hard of hearing for 9 years, and has worn a cochlear implant for over eight years now. The "struggle" in determining his deafness provided me with a significant background in the hearing impaired issues.
I am familiar with diverse literature types and this is a subject I enjoy working with students. I like making learning about literature FUN!
The various styles of literature can seem so tough, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the concepts like know the different styles (ballad, sonnet, "Do you Haiku?"), the eras and the artists who wrote various pieces, and the times that things happened in literature movements become easier.
I am very familiar with creating diverse lesson plans for phonics and this is a subject I enjoy working with students.
I like learning about phonics and making this FUN for students!
Learning about phonics can seem so tough, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the concepts like knowing the pronunciation of sounds, various blended groups of letters, vowel or consonant sounds, and the formation of even stating those sounds become easier.
I am very familiar with creating diverse lesson plans in reading and this is a subject I enjoy working with students.
I like making reading FUN!
Reading can seem so tough, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the concepts like enjoying a small narrative, working on sentences in a paragraph, and what level reading is the student at, what do they enjoy or can they read, and figuring this all out become easier.
For SAT reading testing, the main concepts are to understand the meanings in passage-based reading and sentence completion.
I can help with these two main goals by providing practice tests and study guides for my students. With passage-based reading we would read various genres of material to understand the meaning behind the written works. For the sentence completion, this is similar to cloze sentences where a reader inserts the correct and appropriate words to "fill in the blanks" of the sentence.
Both of the two main concepts take time to master, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the student can become successful.
I am a parent of a young teen son and two adults who have mild/moderate and intensive special needs. The adults have graduated from high school years ago and now live away from home; my young teen son is still in school and lives at home with me. I've helped them all with academics and their life skills processes so that they are successful in school and their work situations.
I am also an educational advocate for special needs individuals; I have completed a practicum in a master’s degree program in special education and have worked in both public and private school systems.
I interface with therapists, teaching staff, and medical professionals in assessment of care for the individuals with whom I am charged. We work together as a united group to provide the best outcome for the individual.
I am very familiar with creating fun ways to learn about vocabulary. All we need to do is know where we use it most and we are half way there!I like the idea of learning about vocabulary FUN!
Learning vocabulary can seem so tough, but with practice and a patient tutor (that's ME!) the concepts like mastering spelling or use of words and terms become easier.
