I offer science and math teaching for under-challenged, over-challenged, home schooled, twice-exceptional, adult, interrupted, and other non-traditional learners.
I tutor all-levels Biology, high school and college Physics and Chemistry, and Mathematics through Precalculus. I also teach test-prep math and science, including the GED, ACT, SAT, SSAT, and GRE.
I believed I "hated" science when I was in high school; in truth I just didn't connect with how science was taught. I discovered my love for Biology after I had graduated from college, and I returned to school for graduate training. My experience earning a Master's degree through Harvard Extension School developed my admiration and appreciation of non-traditional learners and non-traditional learning. My experience working on my PhD in Biology has given me the professional training to teach students of a wide variety of abilities.
The modern classroom doesn't serve the needs of all students. Too many students believe that they are "bad at math", or "bad at science", when their real struggle has been with the demands of one-size-fits-all education. Some students miss out on learning in school because they have their own troubles at home in life, or with specific teachers or teaching styles. And some subjects - such as Evolution - are simply not taught in all school systems.
Mathematics in particular is a subject where missing seemingly small facts in elementary algebra can cause cascading problems later on. A student who can easily factor a quadratic equation with multiple techniques may misunderstand seemingly simpler ideas, such as the meaning of fractional and negative exponents. I use diagnostic probes to explore students' mathematical thinking and help to shore up their knowledge gaps.
My approach: Understanding scientific material and the scientific process are skills that you can learn. My role is to help my students build the math and science skills which will allow them to meet their personal, academic, and professional goals. Lessons are guided by each student's needs and strengths, not by a pre-set curriculum.
My academic background: I have a BA in Mathematics from Wesleyan University, and a Master's (ALM) in Natural Sciences from Harvard Extension School. I'm currently writing my dissertation for a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from Indiana University. I use computer simulations to study the effect of population size on the evolution of sexual recombination.
My teaching background: I have seven semesters of teaching experience as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University. I know what college professors expect incoming first-year students to have learned in high school, and what they expect college seniors to have learned. Every semester I've taught, it's been my responsibility to meet individually with students to give special instruction, to improve their performance, and to guide them in developing effective study habits.
While in Indiana, I also volunteered with my local library's adult literacy program. There I worked with an adult learner who is studying for her GED. I'm grateful to have gotten to work with such a self-motivated, self-disciplined student.
I have private tutoring experience through a Boston-local tutoring agency, where I've developed skills and strategies for teaching math and science in person and over Internet videochats. I find this is very convenient for both student and teacher, as shorter sessions can be scheduled and travel time is not a concern.
I work with students in Greater Boston with a variety of needs and in a many different subject areas. It's a great privilege to work with so many amazing and special people.
