A life-long learner with a collaborative approach, I am able to combine subject expertise with good interpersonal and coaching skills. I have always held myself to a high standard in academic subjects, and I will bring this same attitude to my tutoring practice.
I am now retired and would like to provide my tutoring services as a way of giving something back to the community. You will find me highly motivated, creative, and skillful in 1 on 1 problem solving sessions.
I was a straight A student in all my mathematics courses, from Algebra 1 through Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra. I truly love math and am excited by the possibility of tutoring in this subject area.
I earned a B.A. summa cum laude with Honors in Religion from Haverford College and then a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin.
After five years of postdoctoral research in microbial genetics and biochemistry, I decided to switch fields and become a computer programmer, specializing in embedded systems and database technology.
As a programmer, I learned many software languages and honed my skills in computation, problem solving, and algorithm design.
After 20 years as a programmer, I became a software development manager. I had the opportunity to build solid one-on-one coaching, mentoring, and collaboration skills. I found during that 10 year period that I have a natural bent for explaining difficult concepts, working with others, and forming joint learning partnerships.
Given my love for mathematics and my experience in problem solving, coaching, and mentoring, it was a natural move to develop a tutoring practice in mathematics.
To be entirely focused and competitive, I have decided to limit my initial tutoring subjects to Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Precalculus.
Algebra 2 includes such topics as systems of equations, polynomials, rational functions, logarithmic and exponential functions, conic sections, and matrices. I thoroughly enjoy this material and have a full mastery of the subject. Let me partner with you to learn the relevant definitions for these concepts and to become proficient at algebraic symbol manipulation.
Precalculus is an interesting mix of topics that will help you be prepared for Calculus. It offers multiple opportunities to learn good problem solving techniques. Let me partner with you to approach the topics in this course with technical skill and care, while having a bit of fun at the same time.
Trigonometry has wide application. I myself have used it in surveying and classical mechanics. Once you learn the basic definitions, problems can be easy to solve.
I have a lot of experience solving trig problems. I can work with you so that you too will gain the necessary facility with this key subject.
