Hi,
I thought I'd provide some history about why I started tutoring with this website. A good portion of my part-time job income during college came from tutoring for introductory math and economics classes. After college, where I graduated with a Mathematics/Economics major, I started working as an actuary. A lot of my actuarial work included developing complex mathematical models for insurance, then using those models to help companies determine how to invest insurance premiums to make sure they earned enough money to make claim payments down the road. I did and still do find this modeling work interesting, but wanted to find a job that was more helpful to my local community, rather than a global insurance company.
I quit in April of 2011 to start organic farming, especially after reading that a lot of the health insurance costs came from diets lacking enough real foods (fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables). Tutoring is a way to supplement my income during the winter months, though I will be doing limited tutoring in the farming season as well.
My tutoring methods cater to the students need for what is being learned. For instance, an aspiring painter that is preparing for the SATs might benefit more from math test-taking skills and memorization tricks. Someone who planned on majoring in math in college would benefit more from a deeper and intuitive understanding of mathematical relationships. To me, the tutoring approach depends entirely on why the student needs the knowledge, and how they'd like to apply it in the future.
